Good news for hygienically challenged men: Science has found that exposure to male sweat can brighten a woman's mood and influence the release of a hormone that affects the length and timing of her menstrual cycle.

Researchers discovered this by applying extracts from male underarms to the upper lips of 18 women ages 25 to 45. (The extracts were highly processed, and none of the women discerned their source.) After six hours, they asked their subjects to rate their moods using a fixed scale.

"Much to our surprise, the women reported feeling less tense and more relaxed during exposure to the male extract," said study co-leader Charles J. Wysocki of the Monell Chemical Senses Center and the University of Pennsylvania's School of Veterinary Medicine. "This suggests that there may be much more going on in social settings like singles bars than meets the eye."

The women also had a shift in blood levels of luteinizing hormone, which typically surge right before ovulation but also show many smaller spikes throughout the menstrual cycle. With the male extract, these spikes came earlier and more often.....
