Visit??? Just say the word and here I am! Lost in the Wilderness is more like it. Hey, hey, amigos and amigettes. Did anyone see the tee-vee program on the new species of monkey that has been discovered in the Bolivian rainforest?? Yikeroo. It is soooo cute and fuzzy. And, they mate for life..AND the male of the pair tends the offspring. Wonders never cease.

Love and howdies to you all.

ww :-)

Morning all, Very Happy

Happy Solstice - - - It was on this day in 200BCE that a genius named Eratosthenes measured the circumference of the Earth with a single stick.
True story......... Shocked
He prearranged for the day by observing the sun's movement North and noticed that it stopped moving North and was perfectly vertical (casting no shadows on the ground from a vertical position at a point in Africa now known as Syene - and located on what is now known as the Tropic of Cancer.) Having been practicing math with the Greeks, he decided to locate himself at a Northern latitude from the Tropic of Cancer and observe what happened. He did this at Alexandria, Egypt. On this day 2200 yrs ago - he placed a stick vertically in the ground at Alexandria and at the appointed time measured the angle of the shadow cast by the sun and the stick. Using the information, he calculated the circumference of the Earth. He was almost completely accurate in his measurement, as we have determined today.

Oh, the part about the old guys thinking the Earth was flat was invented by a bunch of religious nuts during the middle ages. Rolling Eyes

Today is a sad day for both aviation and space exploration.

The solar-sail spacecraft launched early a.m. from a Russian submarine in the Barents Sea has been lost. The U.S. lost a pilot flying >

Hoping for better news in the future - AND for the story of George Wayfarer's guardian angel Smile

The wonderful little travel companions are snoozing away at the hamburgers right now. Bailey is on the floor beside me in the den, while Cleo is snuggled up between hamburger and mrs. hamburger in the living room. Cleo is snorting happily as she drifts in and out of sleep.

We had a great drive, with a 45 minute break for a breakfast picnic on our way. The dogs and I ran around for a while, shared bacon and eggs and toast from Wendy's, ran a bit more, and then hopped back in the car. Got off the highway near the Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory, and drove the last hour of the trip on the back roads. Fabulous drive.

Hoft, thanks for the info! Are you home now or still traveling? <always good seeing your posts>

"The converted intercontinental ballistic missile carrying the craft launched safely at 12:46 p.m. Pacific Daylight Time from the Russian submarine Borisoglebsk. The first part of the launch went according to plan, Planetary Society President Louis D. Friedman said Tuesday from Moscow, but controllers subsequently observed a great deal of "noise" in the signal during the last part of the launch phase".

What the flight needed was pwayfarers guardian angel perhaps? Smile

Always good to see you, Stradee, and the other people here.

The Russian booster rocket was in fact a submarine-launched ICBM - it failed 83 seconds into the flight, losing the solar-sail spacecraft. Wondering whether the Russians had some idea that their ICBMs were so unreliable as to crash on their heads before reaching any targets - maybe that's what kept us safe all these years Smile

Morning all,

All clicked.

HofT, I have the feeling that what kept the world alive during the Cold War years was more in framework of "Dumb Luck".
For instance, during the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, few Americans were even aware of the situation - which in real life consisted of several ship loads of atomic weapons actually armed, ready to fire and aimed at the US, AND, the Captains of the ships - with their fingers poised over the firing buttons - had NO communication with Moscow. That was the closest that humans have come - to my knowledge - in destroying the Earth. Completely.

Yep, dumb luck.

This site will give updates.

Solar Sail Latest Updates
June 21-22, 200

.......While it is likely that this conclusion is correct, there are some inconsistent indications from information received from other sources. The Cosmos 1 team observed what appear to be signals, that looks like they are from the spacecraft when it was over the first three ground stations and some Doppler data over one of these stations. This might indicate that Cosmos 1 made it into orbit, but probably a lower one than intended. The project team now considers this to be a very small probability. But because there is a slim chance that it might be so, efforts to contact and track the spacecraft continue. We are working with US Strategic Command to provide additional information in a day or so.

If the spacecraft made it to orbit, its autonomous program might be working, and after 4 days the sails could automatically deploy. While the chances of this are very, very small, we still encourage optical observers to see if the sail can be seen after that time.

We await further developments and information coming out of Russia, STRATCOM, and the tracking stations.

eBeth, your pictures and links are tempting to start vacation right away. Thanks for the mental break.

To all wildclickers:
Enjoy summer- ice cream, sun, beach, BBQ, travel, lazy days....
