ehBeth,
You have the right place - it's just beautiful here. One of Patti's dear friends is an artist and has an exhibit - which we viewed today. The town also is close to Keesler Air Force Base - so has many retirees. One of the things I like about places with many military retirees is the neat variety of great things you find in the supermarkets - things that one never comes across elsewhere.

Good to see everyone - - -

Looks like a lovely community, Danon. The mention of a National Seashore definitely caught my eye. I'm going to have find out more about it.

Danon - be careful!

Quote:
Emergency officials stepped up storm preparations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Friday, encouraging residents in flood-prone areas to move to higher ground before strengthening Tropical Storm Arlene moves ashore sometime this weekend.

The storm moved into the Gulf of Mexico on Friday and forecasters said Arlene could intensify to a weak hurricane before hitting land late Saturday.

Tropical storm warnings were issued for the northern Gulf Coast from Grand Isle, La., to St. Marks, Fla., including all of the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Hurricane watches were posted from Panama City to the Louisiana-Mississippi border. The storm had top sustained winds of 60 mph, up from 45 mph earlier in the day Friday.

Butch Loper, Jackson County's Civil Defense director, said the latest National Weather Service information indicated his county on the border with Mobile County, Ala., could expect Arlene to pack very heavy rains, a 2-4 foot storm surge and wind gusts possibly around 60 mph.

Across inland areas, heavy rainfall could cause additional flooding.

Seems like you may in the zone which will be impacted.

Confused

Speaking of which the Deep Impact spacecraft is due to meet a comet late evening on July 4th; we may be able to see the collision from North America:

http://www.physorg.com/newman/gfx/news/deepimpact-concept.jpg

"The crater produced by the impact could range in size from a large house up to a football stadium from two to 14 stories deep. Ice and dust debris will be ejected from the crater, revealing the material beneath. The flyby spacecraft has approximately 13 minutes to take images and spectra of the collision and its result before it must endure a potential blizzard of particles from the nucleus of the comet. "

HofT, great site...... Thanks and will keep a lookout.

ehBeth and all, The Tropical Storm (TS) didn't affect the area of Ocean Springs at all - it just became another day with light rain. However, just to the East there were winds of up to 70 mph hitting the coast. No significant damage reported. Everyone around here just took the storm approaching with light interest.

Danon,
the plane was found and rescued today in the early afternoon.
No pictures, because the rescue team has a contract with a TV station. So no details. Just that the plane seems in rather good shape, some damage at the underside and the cabin.

http://tauchen.nullzeit.at/Content.Node/news/2005/06/thunderbolt_traunsee_bergung.php ( in German).

Hello to all- have a nice week.

ul, you are so nice to post the pix. That is really good news that the aircraft is out of the water. It looks to be in good condition after the ditching plus all those years. Hopefully they will air the TV viewing on the History Channel.

We are back home in NE Texas and loving it - there is no place like home.

The task of these planes was to show that the US army was near and that people could hope to be freed. So they flew at a very low altitude. The pilot of this plane was too low and touched the water.
An eyewitness ( a child at that time) told reporters that the pilot "watered" the plane and that he could get out and started swimming towards the shore.
This boy took a rowing boat and went out and picked him up.
That's all I could find.
