Filibustering let loose

Reply Wed 27 Apr, 2005 07:08 pm
Recently the democratic party has filibustered Pres. Bush attempt to have 7 judges originally rejected by the senate but Bush sent them back hoping for a revote. Filibustering is the only weapon the minority party can use to get their way. By filibustering they can waste time until the senate has come to a stalemate. Nothing gets done through filibustering. Republicans want to get rid of the filibuster rule. What do you think should be done

George should get the hint that those judges are unacceptable. Put that on your homework. You will get an f but I promise your teacher will privately love it.

george, take a hint ? that's a good one bvt.

the republicans turned down a compromise that would have let some through without further discussion, as i heard it. so i guess all they really want is "what they want" and nothing else.

the only one that's wasting time is dubya, since he won't take the hint. the dems are just doing their job which is representing the half of the country that voted against the bush agendas.

if that's being obstructionist, fine. obstruct away...

Is it the 9th circuit court of appeals that always comes out with the ultra-left wing rulings?

Imagine a court in which the far right had the same kind of results. The Dems want to keep that from happening, mostly because they fear abortions may be made illegal or harder to obtain.

Democrats fear a lot more than abortions being made illegal.

They fear the erosion of civil rights, the blurring of separation of church and state, the favoring of corporate issues over labor and rulings that favor the rich over the poor.

The main issue is that it is dangerous for one party to stack the courts with lifetime appointments without any checks or moderation.

I am very afraid of that.

You will be hard pressed to find a single post of mine that does not clearly state that it is my opinion. Thanks for playing along though.

Exactly. The Dems have the 9th circuit and refuse to give any ground to the right.

Senator Jefferson Smith wrote:

Just get up off the ground, that's all I ask. Get up there with that lady that's up on top of this Capitol dome, that lady that stands for liberty. Take a look at this country through her eyes if you really want to see something. And you won't just see scenery; you'll see the whole parade of what Man's carved out for himself, after centuries of fighting. Fighting for something better than just jungle law, fighting so's he can stand on his own two feet, free and decent, like he was created, no matter what his race, color, or creed. That's what you'd see. There's no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties. And, uh, if that's what the grownups have done with this world that was given to them, then we'd better get those boys' camps started fast and see what the kids can do. And it's not too late, because this country is bigger than the Taylors, or you, or me, or anything else. Great principles don't get lost once they come to light. They're right here; you just have to see them again!

None of the people that NEED to be voted on have any rulings in their past that would lead someone to think they would go that way.

If they were doing their jobs, they would be voting not stalling. It reminds me of the same stupid game the dems pulled in Texas when the redistricting took place. They didn't like what was going to happen so they left town and threw hissy fits. The Dems here are doing the same thing but on a larger scale. Cast a vote and don't by a baby.

It just can't be repeated enough, he already has had more judges through than clinton did. Why all the fuss? I just don't get it.

I agree with ebrown's post regarding it being more than about abortion but about eroding civil rights and liberties, for me it is anyway.

Imagine? We don't need to imagine, have you looked at some of the SCOTUS rulings lately?

Oh, you are referring to the redistricting in Texas that was declared illegal. That redistricting?

Allow Congress to vote on these judges. That;s what should be done. If the Dummycrats are afraid they do not have enough vote to vote down the nomination, that is their own fault for not being in a majority position.

IO suggest respectfully that you might go back and review your high school civics. The Senate is purposely undemocratic. It is designed to be a voice and a check against the possible oppression of the majority. Some issues are too important to be decided by a simple majority of Senators.

And I bet you didn't realize that the Senate Democrats actually represent a larger number of constituents than do the Senate Republicans.
