Some of you may remember Kuvasz from the early days of Abuzz. This is what he once posted on the subject of housework:

Follow your bliss.

your art work is what makes you click. and you know well that when the inspiration hits you would forego coffee, heroin, and even trips to the bathroom when it strikes. so, do what you want, for if not, what the hell is the purpose of your life?

and you can always get a leaf blower like i do when i have to clean the house.

And g'day to you, too, Ms. ehBeth.

No, I did not see that pic. I did see the early photos, but apparently I didn't look long and far enough.

When I have time (later, not now), I'll go back and try to find the link to your photo album.

Your trip certainly was an example of fully experiencing the place, not just skimming the tourist superficialities.

Hiya, Aa. Maybe outside work is more satisfying because it tends to stays "done" longer than inside work, or at least evolve into a different form of natural chaos then inside clutter. Which, sadly, always looks the same.

And Noddy's comment reminded me of Dorothy Parker.

Front coming through. Let's hope for some rain out of this one. Last one was a blank. Head hurts though.

You met all here while hanging out the laundry? Mine is going up inside right now. Possibility of straight-line winds soon.

sumac, I first posted on the Rainforest threads at Abuzz in about August 2000 . In October 2000, Canajun Thanksgiving, I installed my clothesline. Posted on the thread about learning how to use an post hole digger, and how to mix cement.

It was that year's "think globally, act locally" activity.

Somewhere along the line, I posted a pic of the WildClicking clothesline.

Very Happy

Thanks, everybody, for the welcoming greetings a page ago.

I really enjoyed the comments about housework and some of its philosophical underpinnings, the least of which was a comment from somebody to me a few years ago: "Doing house cleaning is like buying groceries or having sex - no sooner do you finish than you have to start all over again."

One of the little gems I enjoy is the etymological connection between the word "ecumenical" and housework.

It starts with the image and concept of "house" (or household), which is "demo" in Indo-European.

From the front door of the house, there are two paths which angle away from each other.

One path is Latin, starting with (if I remember the word correctly) "domus" for house. Stemming from that are dominion, dominus (Lord, Master), dominate, condominium, despot, danger, domestic, etc.

The other path is Greek, where the word for house is "oikos". From there extend many words, such as "oikein" (to inhabit), oikoumene (the inhabited world), and oecumenical (later modernized in spelling to ecumenical).

The words directly connecting oikos and house[work] are:
oeciomania ... mental derangement as to the management of household affairs.
oecophobia ... an aversion to home life or housework.
echphobia ... abnormal fear of home surroundings.

I fear that I can identify with some of these words all too easily.

Mental derangement. I'll second that.
