This is the first known time this has happened where another country refused to extradite someone to America because the prisons here violate international human rights standards.

Russia recognized the independence of two parts of the Donbass. But Russian and Russian-armed separatist forces had not been able to occupy even half of the region. With the all-out invasion there was not an outpouring of public support for Russia by Ukraine's Russian-speakers. A lot of them joined with their Ukrainian-speaking neighbors in taking up arms against the Russian army.
Under Putin Russian elections are charades, but it does seem that there was public support in Crimea for its annexation to Russia. Crimea had only been annexed to Ukraine in 1954.
Don't look for ethnic yearnings to figure out Crimea. Just as you shouldn't look to working class solidarity to understand Russia's commitment to Assad in Syria. Look at Russian geopolitics, in particular naval bases.
Sevastopol is home to Russia's Black Sea Fleet and its warm-water navy in particular. The city was more or less founded by the Russians as a naval bastion under the orders of Catherine the Great. In Syria? Tartus is the Russian navy's Mediterranean base, which Putin was indisposed to give up either to some incoherent American-created coalition or to jihadis.
Wars and annexations for naval bases? Sounds like imperialism to me, but Russian warships have been in Crimea since the 1780s and at the small fueling base at Tartus since 1971.
Putin didn't send in his forces to liberate anybody. The Ukraine is populated by people who want to be Ukrainians and are willing to fight against a brutal and much larger enemy to maintain an independent Ukraine.
Which is not to say that American neocons with their Cold War II fever dreams have helped matters. People like that need to be sidelined as Ukraine and the world negotiate with Putin to end this war.

There is the problem.

The 'rest of the population' wants too little.

Just read an article posted on facebook by CI. Says the Jan. 6 Committee's strategy is to pressure Clarence Thomas into resigning through actions against his wife.
