I have not seen the bridge (I live on the coast) but a friend really loved it. Calatrava is a very appreciated architect and it was a real coup for Redding to get that bridge, in my opinion.

Why do you love san Diego?
San Diego has the most temperate climate in the U.S. It's also a big city with a small town feel.
Stay near the coast. All the smog, heat and bad neighborhoods 45 min away from the coast.
