Goldwater described him as a carpet bagger--which I suspect was sour grapes. I did not agree with his politics and would never have voted for him. I admired his courage and the courage of conviction that he display. At least he lived a long and productive life. We could use a good many more such men, or women, regardless of their ideology.

Worth reading, (in my opinion) by Victoria Reggie Kennedy .

For John McCain, it was always country first

That is an affliction common to huge numbers of Americans, rabel. You are one of them. As are all those who sit silent about US war crimes/terrorism/... .

I will always praise John McCain's military service for what it was, Duty Honor Country.

Give it a few more days and I'll comment on his political service.

You forgot to mention your personal conflict of interest, Baldimo.

What honor is there fully and enthusiastically committing war crime after war crime after war crime.

What honor is there in reenlisting time and again to continue murdering civilians, a WAR CRIME, to take part in an illegal invasion of a nation where the people only wanted their independence?

Can you not grasp the stunning hypocrisy in all this - the US is forever bragging and propagandizing about how important freedom and independence is?

The US was mouthing anti-colonialism and freedom all the time they were slaughtering innocents throughout SE Asia and installing their own brutal, vicious right wing dictatorships.

Can you not grasp the stunning hypocrisy in all this? Not to mention this level of human evil? This all makes the Nazis look like boy scouts.

Canadians who do not acknowledge how the so-called first nations have been treated ever since the British took over in 1760; who do not acknowledge that slaves in the American south who fought for the British in the American revolution were either abandoned or were sent to New Brunswick or Nova Scotia and were sold back into slavery; who do not acknowledge the uprisings in Canada in 1837-38, including the lynching of American immigrants and of les habitants and the burning of farms in Lower Canada; who do not acknowledge the appalling treatment of Irish immigrants (almost exclusively Catholic) in the 1840s; who do not acknowledge the treatment of métis almost throughout the 19th century, beginning with Lord Selkirk in 1811 and culminating in the execution of Louis Riel in 1885; who do not acknowledge that that old drunk McDonald created the Northwest Mounted Police (now the RCMP) to deal with the métis in a corrupt deal with the railroads, involving Federal funds for them while they shipped the troops, horses and supplies to Manitoba; who do not acknowledge the wholesale theft of aboriginal lands for mining; who do not acknowledge the internment of Ukrainians and Canadians of Ukrainian descent in the First World War and of Japanese and Canadians of Japanese descent in the Second World War; who do not acknowledge the tragedy of the residential schools and the "60s Scoop" when aboriginal children were taken from their families to be adopted out to white families; who do not acknowledge the Mohawk rebellions in 1990 and 2017; who do not acknowledge how the Mohawks have been robbed and cheated ever since they fought for King George in the American revolution, and then thought they had found refuge in Canada; who do not acknowledge the torture, the murder by torture of a Somali boy caught stealing from the Canadian Parachute Regiment--and videotaped so they could enjoy it again and again (which is why there is no longer a Canadian Parachute Regiment) . . . Such Canadians aren't two-faced, they are, apparently multi-faeed.

People who live in glass houses . . .

Yes, Trump doesn’t like troops that get caught. He’s pretty clear about his preferences.

@Setanta,
All actions noted by you are fully acknowledged and condemned unequivocally on their own, Setanta.

Canada, like the USA, like Australia, like New Zealand, like South Africa, like the UK, like ... are nations founded on genocide. The hypocrisy of the west is stunning in its lies, cover ups, past evils, and ongoing evils.

On a scale, none of these other nations come close to what the US has done and continues to do as the world's leading war criminal/terrorist nation, save for their various levels of support they have given for US evil.

Not that they aren't capable but they lack the military power.

McCain was nothing but a war criminal, a totally unrepentant war criminal. Are we to start looking for good deeds Hitler has done?

@Setanta,
You are letting the troll draw you off topic, Sentanta. You, of all people, should know better.

Better to just ignore him. This is a thread about John McCain.

Considering the history of North Vietnam and Ho Chi Minh, I laugh at your use of the word independence. He was a Communist dictator who had no intentions of holding elections to unite Vietnam and instead invaded his neighbor because he knew his political views would never win a free election, just like "free elections" never take place in socialist/communist countries. When there is only one person on the ballot and you kill or imprision all of your rivals, as Ho Chi Mien did, how can you say Independence with a straight face? Russia and China both green lighted the invasion of South Vietnam with them agreeing that China would provide material support and training to troops. What were the results of the election? We will never know, Ho Chi Mien invaded before the elections took place.

And yet a communist nation invaded it's non-communist neighbor before elections could be held to determine if the countries should be unified... Give it a rest.

It pisses you off that they were killing Communist scum. You don't care about the killings committed by Ho Chi Mien and his govt when they were doing their "land reforms"... History debates how many people he killed in this time frame, 13,000, 25,000, 75,000 or 100,000, the fact even one person died because the govt wanted to take their land flies in the face of what you call independence. Give it a rest, Communism/Socialism only exists in the form of dictatorships.

If I thought for even one second you actually cared about civilian deaths, I might continue this scam of a discussion, but you don't, so I won't. Ho Chi Mien is no better than Putin with how they deal with their political rivals.

Does this sound like someone who is concerned with civilian deaths in his own country?
