material girl,

As with ANY prescription medication you take, always, always, always, check with your doctor before making any changes on your own. Shewolf pointed that out and I will again. Smile If we are not all MD's, it is unwise to self diagnose, prescribe (or in this case un-prescribe) on our own. Just wanting what is best and healthiest for you! Smile

There has been much talk about when we will be 'covered' by taking the pill.
Some think it works straight away, others think it takes weeks.

I am trying a new pill and I read the little leaflet and on at least 2 occasions(either taking it on first day of period or straight after a differnt 21 day pill) it says the person will be contraceptively covered from the first day it is taken!

The doc says its a new pill, so do yuo think this only apply to new pills?!!

I would think so - my pill leaflet says effective after 2 weeks. Also, my doctor said the same thing after having my baby and going back on the pill.

I would imagine each type of pill would be different, also doctors and drug companies could find out new information that could change their perspective of effectiveness of pills. I remember when I first started taking birth control, I was told to wait an entire month before the pill was effective. More recently with the same (or similar dosage) I am being told it is effective after 2 weeks. Who knows - maybe this is directly a result of your new pill or maybe it is more recent and better information.

Correction on my pill leaflet - must be a change it nows says effective after 7 days. I typically just throw the leaflet away, but decided to take a quick peak at it this month.

Speaking of the pill...If I just take it straight through the period pills, meaning I start a new pack on the day I would be starting the sugar pills, will I have my period or will it just not start?

nope.
usually ( about 90% of the time )
taking the next pack instead of the sugars, you get no period.

Usually it will not start. I have done this when on vacation if I did not want to have a period (usually only for a few days into the week though).

I have also manipulated my schedule before to avoid a period during vacation. Instead of taking my pill every morning I would take the next one at night, then the next I wouldn't take until the following morning and so forth - to push my period off another week. It depends on the make up of your pills. For most of the normal pills they are made strong enough so if you miss a pill (which I did yesterday) you don't have to worry as long as you catch it within 24 hours. If you take the mini-pill (low dosage) then you have to be much more careful. I took this when I was breast feeding.

I take estrostep which is a multi level pill.

It goes 20, 30, 35 ethinyl estradiol. Will this effect the effectivness of skipping the sugar pills?

I really don't know - not sure exactly what sort of dosage mine is - but in the leaflet it did state that you could extent taking the pill (non-sugar ones) if you wanted to avoid your period during a certain week.

I think I did this when I was going on my honeymoon (manipulating taking it that is) and certainly wanted to avoid having my period then! Also, I was not as concerned about getting pregnant as we figured we would start a family in a year a so after getting married.
