French president Macron has accused by the Yellow Vests of being an "ultra-liberal" president for the rich. (In France liberal is mainly used as a term of abuse - as in the term ultra-libéral meaning 'ultra-capitalist'. [His party - La République en marche - generally is ranked from the centre left to the centre right of the French political spectrum and is sometimes presented as a catch-all party.])

At the end of the great post-crisis debate of the Yellow Vests, Macron had instituted a "citizens' convention for the climate" (convention citoyenne pour le climat) bringing together 150 citizens drawn by lot to prepare proposals against global warming.
This Sunday they handed over their copy to the Minister of Ecological Transition, Elisabeth Borne.

A 286-page report with 149 proposals, including for instance better thermal insulation of buildings and a reduction in the speed limit on motorways from 130 to 110 kilometres per hour.
But more important, the voted to enshrine climate and environmental protection in the preamble and Article 1 of the French Constitution. In addition, the "ecocide" is to be made a criminal offence for environmental destruction. According to the Citizens' Council, the French are to vote on both proposals in a referendum.

Crime of écocide (in French)

I think this to be progressive, even if initialised by a centrist.

Not that anyone asked ( but this thread has served as a sounding board for musings on candidates in the past, so...)

My original preference for VP was Liz Warren. I still think she would be effective, but I’m not very confident that she’s in the top 3 Biden is considering now.

The 4 names I’ve heard most often are (in no particular order)

Val Demings
Kamala Harris
Stacey Abrams
Susan Rice

In order of who I’d want

Abrams
Rice
Harris
Demings

I think Abrams would get some southern black vote that might be reticent about Harris. I also think she is absolutely brilliant and has sharp political instincts. I think her intelligence and speaking could move crowds publicly and influence Biden toward more POC friendly and progressive policy privately.

Susan Rice gets passed over in a lot of discussions simply because she’s not at all ‘in your face’ or flamboyant. But I think the quiet determination and grasp of domestic and foreign policy that made her a strong and effective NSA for Obama would serve Biden and the country with her as VP.

I’m sure Kamala Harris would do a good job as VP. One of Biden’s attributes that I always thought was so appealing was his humility - his ability to always publicly defer to Obama, and keep any arguments private. I have concerns that Harris’ fondness for the spotlight and adulation could dilute her effectiveness as a second to Biden.

I have watched Val Demings carefully since her name started being mentioned in these discussions - a few months now. I have doubts that she is as substantive, or would be as effective as the other three. I think the office of Vice President might be a bit of a reach for her.

In the end, the Vice President’s role can be bigger or smaller according to who steps into it, and who they serve under.

I’d be alright with any of them especially considering what we will be replacing.

@snood,
I think Abrams has what it takes. Though she was in the Georgia legislature for 10 years including 7 years as minority leader, I'd like her to be in the President's cabinet or elected Governor of Georgia (though I think she already has been), or a Senator or the House and then run for President. She's definitely a powerhouse who keeps her control even when she's she righteously angry. I wish more officials could do that, its a rare quality.

A primary between Harris and Abrams in 4 (Biden has hinted he might only be a one termer) or 8 years would be amazing.

So flip Abrams and Harris and that would be my list.

@snood,
1. There are several good potential running mates to choose from.

2. Joe Biden definitely has a good list to choose from.

3. At the present time, my preference would be Susan Rice.

@coldjoint,
You obviously have zero self awareness. You defend the most prolific liar in politics and call someone else a liar. You talk about “tearing a new asshole” of a political opponent then point the finger elsewhere when you’re called on it. Your cluelessness wouldn’t be so bad if it was just simpleminded ignorance. It’s simpleminded ignorance bolstered by the same mean-spirited arrogance as the cretin that will be voted out of office in just over a hundred days.

It will be good riddance to him and just desserts for you and your ilk.

@MontereyJack,
That is incorrect. Progressives really are the bad guys. Look how evil they are.

Conservatives are the good guys. Look at the way we oppose progressivism.

Not at all. The reason progressives hate me so much is because I am always countering their untrue claims.
