@blatham,

Paper ballots (however designed) would obviously result in much longer delays before a final result was clear.

That doesn't seem to be the case in European paper ballots, which are generally tabulated within a few hours after voting ends.

I've done counting ballots for more than 20 years.
In my place, results were counted usually within 60 minutes after closing (three stations with around 1100 possible voters each). Town/district preliminary final results are published at least three hours after closing, around the same time, state's preliminary final result; federal preliminary final results six hours later. (It was nine hours in the last European election, but that was due to 42 different parties on the list.)

@Walter Hinteler,

Montana Republican refuses to quit over call for socialists to be 'jailed or shot'
Quote:
A Montana Republican lawmaker who says the US constitution allows for socialists to be jailed or shot will only resign “if God asked me to”.

State representative Rodney Garcia, of Billings also said he has been congratulated by supporters for his controversial stance and has filed to run for state senate.
[...]
Socialists “have to be tried, and if they’re found guilty” they can be jailed or shot, he insisted [speaking to the Associated Press]. “But more than likely they would never be shot because we just don’t do that in today’s society. We’re supposed to be civilized.”
[...]
Garcia told the AP: “They can ask me to step down but no, I don’t think so. I’m going to run for the Senate and I’m going to win. People are going to have to eat their words.”

Saying none of the party leaders who attended the Zinke event said anything at the time, he added: “I’m getting my head so big from people saying, ‘Thank you, Rodney, for bringing this up.’

Your headline leaves that out. It is called "kitman" telling half truths.

a) it's not "my headline",
b) a headline must attract attention, must set (or match) tone of the article etc but isn't a summary,
c) his party and three Republican legislative leaders called on him to resign over the remarks - and not of what he said later to AP.

There are certainly some community colleges to suppose those who can't read and understand a report.

And your degree in journalism comes in handy again.

Good for them. The title (headline) is still misleading.

Thanks guys. I did not know that. Of course, in the US, ballot boxes are carried by donkey over steep mountains passes where the snow is 30 meters deep and that's not even to mention how they are frequently waylaid by members of the Black Panther Party.

Maureen Sullivan wisely predicts that storms of bullshit that will be coming as the election draws near.
Quote:
The hashtag “MayorCheat” was trending, a nasty shot at Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg promoted by Mike Cernovich, the rabble-rousing pro-Trump media personality, who tweeted out his conspiracy theory in the early hours Tuesday about connections between the former South Bend, Ind., mayor and the technology company behind the app at the center of the electoral meltdown.

If that was too subtle, another of his tweets simply repeated “RIGGED!” 35 times.

...Supporters of Bernie Sanders and Andrew Yang circulated the hashtag “#ReleaseThePoll,” claiming without evidence that it had been killed because their respective candidates did better than expected.

...Add to that, of course, the established facts about Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and the whole picture becomes a muddle of things that might be true, things that might sound true but are in fact false or exaggerated, and flat-out preposterous lies.

And this mess isn’t about to stop with Iowa...

agreed

some municipalities in Ontario tried electronic and/or online balloting - took longer to get results or failed completely

the other government levels have declined to move to electronic so far - the feds are really pushing back on it

they've got to do a lot more testing before we can safely/smoothly leave basic paper balloting behind

Putting progressives in charge of anything is always a mistake. Look what they're doing for Venezuela these days.

blatham wrote:
Hewitt is such a slimy bugger. Note his use of "they" here which of course suggests "the Democrats in toto" or maybe "the progressives" when the issue resides with the unique aspects of Iowa's caucus system and the state Dems' failure to adequately test the new system and to train volunteers.

One thing that never fails with progressives, after progressives inevitably screw everything up, they always blame someone else for their failure.

He was telling the truth. Putting progressives in charge of anything is a prelude to a train wreck.

@ehBeth,
Paper ballots are best because they're harder to hack. Anyone trusting a machine with their vote slept through the Snowden-NSA drama.

So Buttigieg. Even with only 70% of the votes in, he absolutely destroyed Biden and put together a broad coalition across all voter demographics. He's been at the top of my list for a while although I'm still pretty agnostic about which candidate I favor. Anyone surprised by his strong showing?

I was. I thought the drops outs would go to Biden as the second choice, but they went to Buttigieg instead. Shows how useless it is to and guess these things.

I think he (Biden)is senile and has out lived his usefulness. He was the reason for the impeachment. It failed. Biden is now an afterthought.

@coldjoint,
Biden didn't have a thing to do with the Impeachment of Donald Trump. Donald Trump's corrupt actions caused impeachment. The Impeachment didn't fail, Donald Trump is Impeached. He is acquitted in the Senate as everybody knew he would be. When you have the head of the Juror consulting with the accused, the fix was in from the beginning.

He sure did. He was the candidate challenging Trump. The charge was getting dirt on Biden, a political opponent, from a foreign country. The same thing the Democrats have gotten away with so far in the 2016 election.

.@SenatorCollins tells @FoxNews her belief that @realDonaldTrump had learned from the #impeachment process might be wrong and was “aspirational.”

Crank up your bullshit-detector.

On CBS, Collins said she believed Trump had "learned his lesson" because after all, "he was impeached".

But that is NOT a message that can be allowed on Fox. Why? Because it conveys that:
1) Trump was guilty of something quite imperfect
2) that impeachment proceedings had some validity
3) that Trump regrets something he did (because it was wrong)

She's not being truthful. She's doing propaganda.
