@edgarblythe,
sabrina4bernie sort of answers her own question:

...five NEW Wars taking us into Africa...

It's no longer one or two conflicts. Used to be you could say you opposed the War in Iraq or the Afghan War. We don't even know who's doing what in Africa. Without a particular conflict to organize around you'd have to see a movement opposed to militarism itself.

Which is what antiwar movements should be doing.

It’s really ******* up life right now. I think Congress should miss paychecks, but they’re all millionaires, so moot point, I guess.

I remember him. He defriended me after I complained about Monsanto. But yes it's going to escalate. As I mentioned elsewhere, Republicans will suffer with the rest of us. I take some comfort in that.

Re civil rights, I’m shocked by your comment. “We haven’t been talking about civil rights”???? BLM is quintessential civil rights, still fighting to achieve the same equality MLK protested for almost 60 years ago - that Lincoln thought he was achieving 160 years ago. I think even pelosi would have known that.
Nonsense. BLM are nothing but a bunch of thugs demanding that black people should be allowed to murder police officers with impunity.

This bill is a good thing. There is way too much antisemitism these days. We should see if we can roll it back a bit.

The comment has destroyed an enormous amount of black goodwill toward the Ds.

I think most African-American voters will know which political party to vote for by the policies espoused and pursued and not make their choice contingent on what particular politician gives or doesn't give BLM a pat on the head. Black USAmericans don't need white approval and shouldn't look for it. That's not solidarity, it's paternalism.

One here is reminded of Jason Reilly's excellent analysis in his book, "Please Stop Helping Us". In his view (and mine) iberal paternalism has contributed significantly to the disintegration of Black families, culture and achievement.

@georgeob1,
I agree that some welfare policies negatively impacted families, but it would be difficult to convince me that evaluating and dismantling institutional racism wouldn’t be helpful to black Americans.

Without welfare there is a high probability I would not be here. Even with it there were times we wondered if there would be a next meal. Most flaws to the system existed because the bureaucracy became more and more glutenous. Instead of making periodic corrections to keep the system working, they killed off the good with the bad.

@jacobsoboroff

Trump said if funded he'll build wall in Texas — where land is 95% private — using eminent domain.

"We take the land... which goes, actually, fairly quickly."

Not at all, actually.

1/3 of cases when *Bush* tried are still in court, as I saw last year.

@Sturgis,
I feel comfortable generalizing about financial worth of congress members. I think even Bernie, who was the poorest member of Congress before his presidential campaign, finally earned his first million from his book.

I exclude those sworn in last week from my statement.

Sturgis, have I ever demanded you to do or not do something? I’m pretty sure I haven’t.

House Democrats release bills to end shutdown

Published January 6, 2019
Quote:
House Appropriations Committee Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey (D-N.Y.) on Sunday released the text of four bills meant to end a partial government shutdown, now in its third week.

The House will first consider an appropriations bill that funds the Department of the Treasury and the Internal Revenue Service, Lowey's office said. Other bills cover departments including Agriculture, Interior, Transportation and Housing and Urban Development.

"While Senate Republicans acting at the behest of President Trump have blocked our bipartisan, comprehensive plan to end the government shutdown, it is urgent that we take steps to reopen parts of the government that most directly affect working families," Lowey said in a statement.

"These bills, which have already passed the Senate on a 92-6 vote, do exactly that."

Lowey's office said the four bills are virtually identical to bills that passed the Senate overwhelmingly last August, adding that text of the bills was included in H.R. 21, which passed the House last week despite a White House veto threat.

Her office also said that the only substantive change between those bills and the four new pieces of legislation is language to ensure that furloughed federal workers receive back pay.

"Unless Congress acts, the American people will not receive their tax refunds, families will lose food stamps, homebuyers seeking mortgages will remain in limbo, and our National Parks will continue to accumulate garbage and waste. These bills will stop this chaos, get many federal employees back on the job, and ensure that key parts of the government are working for the American people. After we pass these four bills, the Senate should clear them and the President should sign them into law," Lowey said.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) on Sunday called on Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) to take up Democratic bills to re-open parts of the government.

"What we ought to do is open up the government first. And that's what we're going to do," Hoyer said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "I would hope that Sen. McConnell would take the responsibility as the leader of the co-equal branch of government, the legislative branch, and send this to the president."

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine), meanwhile, said Sunday that she would support holding a Senate vote on bills passed in the House to re-open parts of the government unrelated to negotiations over funding for Trump's wall along the southern border.

"I'm frustrated in the situation that we've gotten to this point where both sides appear to be intransigent," Collins said on NBC. "It is not a sign of weakness to figure out a middle ground. I think that both sides need to indicate a willingness to listen and to compromise."

@RedactedTonight

Some say that the 'war on terror' is a failure.
They're wrong. From the beginning it was designed to be without boundaries and never end.

The US empire's current narrative on Iran is no different than the lies we've been fed about Iraq, Libya, and Syria.

@edgarblythe,
That includes Vietnam.

The irony about Vietnam is from my two visits to that country. Most do not remember about the war, because most were not born. There is a War Remembrance Museum in Saigon that is well done. That picture on the LIFE magazine cover of that naked young girl running away from the bombing is displayed there.

Senate Democrats should block consideration of any bills unrelated to opening the government until Sen. Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans allow a vote on the bipartisan bills the House passed to open the government. Mitch, don’t delay. Let’s vote!
