There is certainly an elegance to black and white.

I held out on digital photography for a long time. Then I discovered how much less expensive black and white was compared to traditional film and I could no longer resisit.

A word of explaination --

My new photo lab will print in squares. I'm not really used to thinking in squares so I'm practicing by recropping things as squares.

Do you like this kind of cropping?

I love it boomerang! Especially in a photo series like that.

With this I like the color photo in the second row though.
That's just a priceless picture of Mo. What a beautiful
child and these gorgeous blue eyes. He's going to be
a heart breaker one day.

Thanks CJane!

That color one on the second row is the one I gave out for Christmas presents this year. I have a big one of that on my wall. It's one of my favorites too.

I'm thinking of going back and adding "2004" on it somewhere and having a big 12x12 made up - sort of a year in review. I think it would be neat to have something like this for each year.

You know, that's an excellent idea boomerang. I might do that myself
and I have millions of pictures of little Jane to choose from Wink
That's a nice gift for grandparents too.

Then again, I like black-white photos or opaque....

A friend of mine is also a photographer and she made
an abundance of black and white photos of my daughter
a few years back.

Here is my favorite http://www.borge.diesal.de/angel.jpg

think you should put your pictures in a subdirectory - might work better?

interesting stuff boomerang and the series of square portraits is great as well.

I love squares as a format for paintings - the dynamics for composition are very different - I'm working on a whole load of square canvasses at the moment.

I always crop photos if they need it and so even my photos aren't standard proportions. That's the great thing with photoshop, the ability to play like this.

These will be a good addition to your folio.

Hi husker.

Thanks Vivien!

I'm learning that the composition for squares is very different. I'm having a hard time adjusting. I have other photos that I like better than some of the ones I chose for the squares but they just wouldn't work. It is much harder than I thought.

I'm thinking now this difficulty may be why the ones I played with yesterday ended up being so abstract. I'd start trying to pick out the detail and the face has so much detail...

I'll have to make a study of square composition before I begin to shoot with that as a goal.

Cool CJane! I'd love to see it when you get it done and/or if there is any way I can help just let me know.

Maybe I'll make one of my little niece. I might be able to earn a few plane tickets out of that so they can have a 2005 one too!

I'll show you boomerang when the display is finished.
You inspired me now Wink

husker,
there are more pictures, but not every pic is for public
display. I'll show you the one I had put up earlier.
Tell me if you can see it, so I can put it down again, it's
boomerangs thread after all Smile

Post away, CJane. It doesn't bother me to have it up here at all.

Right now I'm just getting the red x + image thing though...

I have a photshop "light" version that came with a camera. I saw that they are selling Pshop 5 for 50 bucks with no manuals (I assume its not pirated) Is the learning curve too steep for a hobbyist to pick up and play?
Id like to do some of my watercolors collaged with 'postage stamps' out of my family members in the field.
Im sorta familiar with working in layers but Ive never gotten the time to spend on something like photoshop or paint shop.

I dislike the Photoshop technique called "watercoloring" where aphoto is pixellated with , like dollops of color , not unlike a wet on dry watercolor. But they look so much like paint by numbers.

I see it, CJane, it's beautiful.

I think squares are wonderful for kids, especially closeups of kids' faces. Kids' faces are much more round than adults', makes the composition easier. (I cropped several of sozlet's baby pics to squares.)
