http://www.breitbart.com/london/2017/08/07/acid-attacks-now-epidemic-levels-says-essex-burns-surgeon/

Quote:
A burns surgeon who treats many acid attack victims coming out of East London has suggested that the proliferation of such crimes is now at epidemic levels.
Dr Martin Niall, a burn surgeon at Mid-Essex Hospital, told National Public Radio (NPR) in the U.S. that acid attacks in Britain “are now at levels that one of my colleagues described as epidemic”.

He added: “Everyone, ourselves included, has been shocked by this emerging threat to public health.”

In terms of attacks per head of population, London is now the acid attack capital of the world, with a 74 per cent rise in assaults — from 261 to 454 — between 2015 and 2016......

@gungasnake,
It's what a 'gunless' society does.

@mark noble,
That is some really ugly ****, leaving victims disfigured for life and as often as not blinded or partially blinded and it's usually part of some petty robbery i.e. nothing remotely close to a rational motive. Guys who do that **** ought to be executed publicly and painfully.

@gungasnake,
I sense it's becoming a trend and being reinforced by it's popularization (Albeit Negative).
Senseless violence originates from senselessness.

@gungasnake,
I thought the point of Acid Attacks was revenge? Usually revenge for something in the relationship realm, ie:
- rejecting a person
- leaving a person
- 'cheating' on a person (from suspected up to actual)
- 'stealing' another persons boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse

The point is to disfigure the person for life, so that no other person will look at them, ever.

As you said, that is some really ugly ****.

I wonder why mainly East London?

@vikorr,
Alright, found this:

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/4016850/acid-attacks-uk-london-areas-statistics/

From the article the rise appears to be gang related, and focused in particular parts of the city:
Quote:
Where are acid attacks being carried out?
London has emerged as a hot spot for acid attacks in recent years, with more than half of incidents taking place in the capital.

The number of cases more than doubled from less than 200 in 2014 to 431 in 2016, with Scotland Yard focusing on specific parts of the city.

Newham, in East London, had three times more acid attacks than the next highest borough, with almost 400 of London's 1,500 reports over the last five years happening there.

I did a search of "demography of Newham London" and found this on the search page"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Borough_of_Newham
Quote:
Demography. Newham has the youngest overall population and one of the lowest White British populations in the country according to the 2011 Census. The borough has the second highest percentage of Muslims in Britain, after the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, at 32%.
London Borough of Newham - Wikipedia

There's also a more detailed breakdown at this address : https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/london-borough-profiles

As a note, the Sun article has a map of boroughs with the highest number of attacks. The above link has a spreadsheet where you can view the demographics on each borough.

https://www.npr.org/sections/parallels/2017/08/06/541209398/acid-attacks-on-the-rise-in-the-u-k Appears to support other statements already in this thread

Quote:
Shah says two-thirds of the victims in Britain are men while, globally, most are women.

"The global pattern is very much males attacking young women and girls, relating to rejected sexual advances or marriage proposals or dowry-related attacks," he says.

And this from the following source: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-40559973

Quote:
Metropolitan Police figures obtained by the BBC show men are twice as likely to be victims of acid attacks in London than women after being linked to a number of gang crimes.

The vast majority of cases never reach trial.

Dr Simon Harding, a criminologist and expert on gangs at Middlesex University, says acid is becoming "a weapon of first choice".

"Acid throwing is a way of showing dominance, power and control, building enormous fear among gang peer groups," he says.

Gang members know there are advantages in using acid to hurt someone rather than a knife because "the charges are more serious if you are caught with a knife and the tariff for prison sentences are much higher".

@vikorr,
They really need to fix those laws, and fast. It's incredibly irresponsible to have this problem in your back yard, and not have already legislated against it. Surely it's can't be that hard to come up with a reasonable law.

@vikorr,
A portion of the 'surge' in such is due to 'soaps' generating behavioural 'acceptabilities' under 'prescription' circumstances.

'A reasonable 'law''?
What worth are rules and regulations when society is governed by those who disregard the very rules they impose upon others?
