Oh, dear. Such sad news this morning. Thanks for Anita's address.

Danon - let's talk. Southern France is my favorite place in the world. It haunts me and I haunt it.

All clicked this day.....

wayfarer,
Ah, yes, I have seen your great photos of the S France areas where you have traveled. You are a gifted photographer. As for my travels there - I would be content to just go straight to Cognac and lie prone under the leaky tap of some cask in the Fine Champagne region. However, It is by the fate of the gods that I have my Patti to keep me straight. We have planned a casual drive from her cousins home in N Italy to begin in Nice and will take the coast road thru Marseille to the Perpignan area. Then up the valley to Toulouse, Bordeaux, Cognac, Limoges, the area of the Grotto De Lascaux, Clermont-Ferrand, Lyon down the valley to Avignon and back home to Italy. We both like the added adventure of taking backroads. I would love to hear your recommendations.

I long to go just about anywhere, Danon, but your adventure sounds particularly wonderful. Hell, I can't even pay the full rent! If I had any money at all, I would be over in Vienna real soon.

Morning all,
(sip coffee)

Great news about the shoe!!

I agree sumac, Vienna is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. I just love it there.

Stradee,
WOW!! Great photos!! We have been only in the N part of Italy. Patti's relatives live in the tiny mountain village - San Pietro Val D'Astico. We HAVE been to Lake Garda!! It's really nice there.

wayfarer,
Thanks, I've emailed you back. You have the correct address!! We expect the visit to S France will take about two weeks to complete. The rest of our time will be spent visiting friends in N Italy and in Vienna.

Sobering tales from our not-so-distant past:

"The Easter Islanders made a different, but similarly disastrous choice: to treat a rich resource of tropical forest as though it were inexhaustible. At some point, it must have been evident that the forest and seabirds were disappearing. What did the hunters and loggers think? What was the person who cut down the last tree thinking as he did it? Jobs before trees?"

See y'all in March.

I suspect the Easter Islanders wound up with egg on their faces.

<<The mention of O. Henry in HofT's link reminded me of a bit of trivia.

Wm Sidney Porter - aka, O. Henry - wrote his first short story in prison "Whistling Dick's Christmas Stocking". He began publishing a weekly magazine "The Rolling Stone" while in Austin, TX in 1884.>>

Yes, HoyT.

I read this article, and the review of this, his latest book, when it was reviewed a number of weeks ago.

Obviously, must reading.
