My table top is 29 inches above the floor. The chair is about 18.5 inches from the floor, but the table has a 2.5-inch lip, and the table top itself is about an inch thick, so there are about 7 inches between the table lip and the chair.

another 29.5 inch from the ground table top
there's a three inch decorative thingie under the edge

chair seat tops are lower than normal - 16.5 - 17.5 inches
oh - the two flintstone chairs - 19.5 inches at the front knee edge

Ha! They all seem to be 29.5 inch - mine too.
Chair ist 18 inch above the floor.

How high will be your countertop Swimpy? I think
that's important too. Mine is extra high, 37 inches, as
I am tall and don't like to bend over.

I just can't wait to see the kitchen finished Swimpy.
It is like, we're all part of this and very exciting to follow
the progress.

Piffka, I have a leather chair and ottoman in this old
english design. Very comfortable!.

29.5" sounds pretty standard then. I just want to make sure I can cross my legs under the table.

Soz, the table I have now has a rail underneath it giving only about 7" clearance. I feel kinda cramped when I sit in it. It's not like I'm tall either.

CJ, The counter top is going to be the standard 36". I'm thinking the table top should be about 31" given that the seats will be 19.5" maybe even taller once they are upholstered. I plan to talk to the upholsterers on Monday.

I need to get some pictures of the old kitchen posted. I keep forgetting to bring the digital camera home from work. Then I'll post pictures of the various stages.

I did decide to go with a crown molding, I guess I forgot to mention that. It's smaller than the one he originally showed me. It's a little mor froo-froo than I wanted, but it kinda matched the moldings on the baseboards and windows.

Thanks for the help everyone. I feel a little better about designing a table now.

An update: The contractor said they will begin the tearout after Easter. It's just as well because I am nowhere near close to ready for them. I need to clean all the junk out of the basement so I have room to put all the junk from the kitchen. Oy. I brought the camera home this weekend. Will try to get pictures of the before kitchen up soon.

I forgot... what kind of sink are you getting?

I've been looking at sinks for our beach cabin kitchen (which may someday be our retirement home) and want something nice, a little different but easy to maintain.

I'm thinking I want a single basin sink, believing that I'd rather deal with one drain. Have you looked at any of the stone composite sinks? I want the faucet to come out of the wall so I want a backsplash plus drainboard on the side. THAT gets $$$$.

Piffka, I think the stone composite sinks stain easily,
unless they're porcelain. I once had a yellow porcelain
sink - that held up really nicely and if I ever replace
my sink I'll go for a red porcelain one.

Skimpy, I'm so looking forward to see your pictures.

A red porcelain sink? Wow. Maybe I should reconsider my plans. Very Happy

I've been looking at this website... very cool backsplashs and ceilings~

Skimpy? Ha! <I like that;)>

I'm getting a single 10" deep stainless steel, undermount sink, Piffka. Counterspace is a premium in my kitchen. A double bowl sink, kind of like this one but a little more rounded. http://www.plumbingsupply.com/images/elkay-elu-1618.jpg Speaking of backspalshes-I've decided against the slate. I think it's too much for my simple little kitchen. I'm leaning toward a neutral tumbled stone, but won't decide until the cabinets are in. I want the cabinet wood to be the star of the show. The paint color is going to be a sage green. It complements the cherry so nicely.

Good Lord! This thread is still going? Have you decided to replicate the Sistine Chapel inside your kitchen, Swimpy?

What seems to be the holdup? I want answers.

Now.

Piffka, you see the red sink in the middle picture?
I like that a lot.

Patience, Gus. All good things take time. Tha cabinets are on order and should be in sometime next week. The contractor is also building a house, so my job has to be worked into his schedule.

Calamity, it takes a brave person to have a sink like that! It is cool, though.

I like that color, too. What I really want... I can't have. They aren't made.
.. Maybe I just don't want to do dishes?

I might just drive over to Swimpy's and check this thing out in person. I'm tired of waiting around.

See you in a few minutes, Swimpy.
