This is not a huge thing...in fact, it's not even a big thing...
...but...
...in one of today's editorials, the New York Times made mention of Harry S. Truman.
Mind you...they wrote it "Harry S. Truman!
Not too many years back...the editors would have caught that period after the "S" and removed it.
Ole Give "em Hell Harry had no middle name. The "S" was just an initial.
Newspapers back in Harry's day were very careful not to include the period.
Times have changed, if guess...and The Times has changed.
How are the mighty fallen from the days of our youth.
Relying on Spell Check has created many more laughable errors.

Indeed!
Or relying on Microsofts composition checking!
Put a few sentences from the Gettysburg Address in...and you'd swear the speech as a total failure.
I find several typos every day. The ones that drive me crazy are the word processing errors -- where you can see that they changed/ inserted a word but didn't change the rest of the sentence to adjust.
NY Times editing has become atrocious. One of my pet peeves is article headlines which could be read in more than one way and it is not until you get into the article that you know which is correct. Formerly in such situations the headline would have been changed to eliminate the reader's confusion. Unfortunately no examples come to mind.
A few howlers from a local columnist who adores tweaking those who toil on the copy desk:
Sports: Ferguson suffered a concussion and was temporarily paralyzed below the waste when he was hit Sunday.
News: State law restricts hunting to within 150 yards of houses.
Obit: The deceased was a member of Doctors without Boarders.
News analysis: ...the actual casting of the votes to elect the president and vice president of the United States was anti-climatic.

Scroll to the bottom for Ronly Bonly (and others).
But....how anal would you have to be to notice the period was there?
C'mon... it's valid point!
What's the world coming to...we got Harry S. Truman with a period and now Britney Spears without one.

I think, I should put this joke into my signature as "Quotation of the Month"
Well, the NY Times as to be an awesome newspaper when the editing and a period is your sole criticism
bye
P..S.: Is the use of the word "sole" correct here?

Yep...it is.
Welcome to A2K.
This is one of the lighter threads. I hope you've visited some of the more serious ones also.
