exhaling....

thanks George. I see 6 hours, if all goes well, to get from orlando to port canaveral as plenty of time. That is, if all goes well. But we did get insurance which covers things going wrong. If the airline screws us up somehow, delays, weather-related or otherwise, we're covered. It'll break my poor heart but at least we'll get some money back.

here are some websites that i use when preparing for a cruise. sites 1 and 2 are general information sites, useful if you are looking for comments of other 'cruisers' - just click on the appropriate bar and search for cruise line or ship. the third site is the CDC site and gives info on the score ships attained inthe CDC inspection, also reports on disease outbreaks and gives hints on how to avoid getting infected. (1) www.sealetter.com (2) www.cruisemates.com (3) www.cdc.gov ... click on : travelers" health ... click on : cruiseships and air travel ... click on : cdc vessel sanitation program ... and you can find out what the inspection team reported

Well, here we are, 3 1/2 weeks away.
I've received the passenger confirmation forms and our passports have been ordered. I had to quickfastinahurry get a copy of my birth certificate from Chicago because my old one was in pieces and I had all of the pieces except the damned seal.
Of course, we had to pay additional fees to get the passports back in time. Laid out close to 400.00 on that alone. There's a few less baskets from the Straw Market, huh?
And yesterday I reserved our car for the drive from Orlando airport to Port Canaveral.
Getting ready... Very Happy

the 'incidentals' sure add up in a hurry, don't they ? watch that bar bill ! most cruiselines operate as a 'cashless' enterprise; you'll be given a chargecard and all your onboard purchases will be charged - you can't pay by cash. on the last day of the cruise you'll be presented with your 'final bill' and i've seen some sturdy men turn weak and exclaim"what, i can't have had that many drinks ! " . well, at that point there is no escaping reality; pay up or ... ! if you do like a little before/after dinner drink, you may want to bring aboard a well wrapped bottle of your choicest in your CHECKED luggage. most cruiselines discourage passengers from bringing alcoholic beverages aboard, but so far haven't had our checked baggage searched (maybe that'll be next : "do you carry any firearms or alcoholic beverages ?" ha, ha ! ) . SHIP AHOI ! hbg

Oooooo. Cashless enterprise? Shocked

Thanks for the tidbit, mr. hamburger. My husband is strictly a cash kind of guy. He's not gonna like that at all. We do enjoy a glass or two or three of wine when in a celebratory mode. I'll be sure to bring our own.

What a way to rob you, while you're having fun.

Just picture yourself stretched out on a deck chair by the pool and a
steward comes up and says " Care for a beverage Miss? The bartender's
special today is Tequila Sunrise." And all you have to do is sign the
receipt. Hard to pass up.

George's Sea Tale

We went on that first cruise only because The Lovely Bride found such
a good deal. Very affordable. Well, relatively affordable. A five
day cruise aboard the SS Sea Breeze with stops in Halifax NS, St. John
NB, and Portland ME. So we signed up. The clan was going to sea.

I loved the Sea Breeze on sight. She was an older ship and actually
looked like a ship, not like a hotel on a hull. Our cabins were
beyond small. Barely enough room to change your mind. Well, so what?
we had plenty of space n the common areas. Our first meal was great
(as would be all subsequent meals) and the service was impeccable.
Better yet, the family that shared our table spent had little children and
went to the buffet for most meals.

Our first day was listed in the itinerary as "at sea". When I woke
up, I sensed something was wrong. "Do you hear that?" "I don't hear
anything." "Me neither, not even the engine." Uh oh.

The boat was broken, something to do with a gasket. A gasket
that could not be repaired until the engine had cooled. We were now
cork, bobbing on the ocean. I went up to the deck and saw...grey.
Fog. Everywhere. Cool, damp, grey fog. So much for the view from
the bridge.

To compensate for the delay they served free rum punches at all the
bars on board. All the bars. I know. I checked. Often. The Lovely
Bride said that I walked a firm and steady straight line. But that
was only because the ship was rocking so much.

We were supposed to be in Halifax he next morning and stay for the
day. Instead, we got there around four in the afternoon and stayed
overnight. That meant we would skip St. John and go directly to
Portsmouth.

Younger son, ten at the time, wanted to swim in what they generously
called the pool. I thought it was too cold, but he finally wore me
out. So we donned our suits and ran shivering to the jacuzzi that was
near the pool. We warmed up and then got out and jumped in the pool.
WOO! After some vigorous thrashing about, we bolted for the jacuzzi.
We did one more jump in the pool and then stayed in the jacuzzi for
while. A long while.

The Sea Breeze was in the news about a week later. It seems the
owning company went bankrupt and the ship was seized in port in
Halifax. The passengers and crew had to find their own ways home.
Glad we missed THAT trip.

I did a Google search for the Sea Breeze and discovered that the sea
Breeze had been purchased and the new owers sent a crew to move her to
Charleston, SC.

According to the Flying Magazine website:

Quote:
The Sea Breeze sailed out of Halifax in mid-December with her old
captain in charge of an inexperienced pickup crew of 33. The Atlantic
was one big gale from the Grand Banks to the Outer Banks, and the ship
was in trouble within hours. East of Boston, one of her two steam
turbines gave out, and the cooling condensers began taking on sea
water. The crew was undrilled in the procedures for securing
watertight doors. The Sea Breeze made it to a position some 230 nm
east of Norfolk before the skipper put out a distress call. The ship
was beyond saving. She was leaking, listing and rolling helplessly in
35-foot waves and 60-knot gusts. Evacuation via lifeboats would be out
of the question. A raft inflated by the crew had blown away like a
helium balloon.

The Coast Guard mounted a daring helicopter rescue of the crew, but
the poor old Sea Breeze went down.

here is a little story to get every one into to the mood for cruisin' . a male passenger noticed that a fellow passenger had donned a fine ladies dress and put on lipstick. he was somewhat surprised and asked : 'are you by any chance a cross-dresser ? ' ; 'oh no ', the other fellow replied, 'but i'm sure you have heard that when the lifeboats are lowered it is always "women and children first !". btw lifeboat drill is usually a pretty serious business. on holland-america line ships any passengers that miss the official drill are 'invited' for a special drill and paraded to the lifeboat station in front of the other (usually gloating) passengers; of course the names of those passengers are usually announced over the loudspeakers for everyone to hear. it's all part of the cruise experience . hbg

11 days to cruisetime!

The passports are in and the travelbook including tickets and tags have arrived. Today I bought a larger piece of luggage (trying to keep us down to 2 pieces), a 256mb photocard for the digital camera and I actually started laying out my wardrobe. I'm pacing myself, savoring every moment. We still need swim attire, my darling needs new sneakers, there's his wardrobe, drycleaning and then toiletries and all of that still to pick up.

I've got to remember that altho the cruise is on the 7th, our actual anniversary is next Wednesday, on the 2nd. If I'm not careful, I just may forget about that!Very Happy

No. Nassau only. I'm hoping to find authentic nightlife since the ship will be docked there for two days.

WE'RE BAAAACK!

We had a great time. Things didn't go quite as planned, the weather was not accomodating to us but when you've got a balcony, that makes up for alot. We never made it to CocoCay and spent only one day instead of two in the Bahamas but there was plenty to do on board and we managed to enjoy ourselves in spite of things. We made our way there and back with absolutely no problems and even got a chance, once we got back to Orlando on the return trip home, to stop by DisneyWorld!

The most important part of all...hubby loved it and is ready and willing to go again. Getting him to leave his home and his computer for five days was a major achievement but hopefully he's seen the light now and realizes that this is a great big world just waiting to be seen and enjoyed.

Thanks to all of you for helping me. All of the hints and tips and info was greatly appreciated.

hmmmm...where to next?
