I have been thinking about this for awhile. I have even done a bit of research on this. Here is the plan.

Sometime in 2007, Johnboy will get on a Northbound Amtrak train for NY or Boston. He might spend a day in those cities meeting with A2Kers, but the amusement would come from some A2Ker riding along for a bit.
And then on to Chicago. Perhaps someone would come along for that whole segment, or perhaps just for a few stops.
From Chicago through the Great Plains and the mountains to Seattle, I would hope to meet A2Kers at whistle stops.
Seattle down through CA. And then across the SW and South.

Every A2Ker would be welcome to ride the train for however much of the journey he/she would like.

I am absolutely serious about this. I intend to go after some of our Aussie and European brethern. -johnboy-

Don't keep your toothpaste in your underwear.

Dang, I always forget that. Embarrassed

Actually, in all seriousness, it sounds like an interesting idea. You can take the Acela here. It costs a bit more but it's rather nice.

Sounds like a pretty spendy idea. Johnnyboy must have a great deal of money and some serious time on his hands.

But, hell, pick me up at Swimpy's house.

If dlowan is going to be on that train you can count me out.

I don't trust that woman.

I think it's a fabulous idea. We had a similar idea once, but not so well worked out, just a one post or two idea, and I forget which forum it was on.

A friend told me he really liked Amtrak from LA to Albuququerque, and getting a roomette, or whatever you call them, was well worthwhile. Apparently there's a club car if you get a roomette, the food is both good and comes with the ticket price, and there is some sort of historical commentary as you pass through different regions. Naturally I don't know if this still happens, what with various Amtrak money problems.

JJorge did say there's difficulty between Seattle and California, re timing, and I've read as much since, as certain areas of track repeatedly wash out and are fixed again, thus somewhat predictable delays.

A2Kers will leave the train in a series of shallow graves near the tracks.....

Though a winding sheet might not be unwelcome.

Yall are laughing at johnboy for his idea. Toothpaste and underwear.

But mark my words. This sucker is going to happen. 15 A2Kers will ride on a portion of the trip and I will shake hands with 150 A2K members.

Who else can claim to that?

I'm not laughing. It sounds like a great way to see the country and meet lots of A2Kers. Having said that, doesn't mean I can find the time or the train fare to take part. (And then there's the passport...)

[Never underestimate the importance of toothpaste and a brush and clean underwear  ]

Good on you.

(Sounds like a good trip. Next fall will be the season from hell to me, which naturally makes me jealous...)
