Indeed. It is confusing. I have no slightest idea where that sign message came from.

@oristarA,
Pumpkin spice lattes are an annual thing at some coffee shops in America. John Oliver showed lots of American news readers waxing lyrical about them.

Common sense indicates that the optician is trying to use humour to get people to have their eyes tested. Maybe he puts on a pumpkin hat when he does the exam, or maybe they get a pumpkin spiced latte after they've had the exam.

It's just a very bad joke.

Thank you Izzy. Not everything is to needed to be taken at face value.

@tsarstepan,
I suppose it's quite nice, but I don't fancy the idea of pumpkin flavoured coffee. I like coffee flavoured coffee.

@oristarA,
Ori they then toss it in your face, then if it waters you're okay. However, it might blind you and that's why they first have you close one eye

@oristarA,
The ad is a play on the annual Starbucks ads (where the pumpkin spice craziness started)

pumpkin spice has become wildly trendy and popular in all kinds of products

the theory in product development/advertising seems to be - stick pumpkin spice on and it will sell

the signboard is a humorous play on all of this

and if anyone wants to know

pumpkin spice is

Quote:
⅓ cup ground cinnamon.
1 tablespoon ground ginger.
1 tablespoon ground nutmeg or mace.
1-½ teaspoons ground cloves.
1-½ teaspoons ground allspice.

you'll recognize a few of those as ingredients in Chinese five-spice powder

..and I can't help but wonder if the good people at the Durex company use that recipe to... hmm... err, 'spice up' their product. But thanks, I didn't know about this either!

@oristarA,
I figured that pumpkin spice eye exams were somehow connected to the use of mace as a substitute for nutmeg when making the spice.

Yes. It is a myth that mace and nutmeg are interchangeable. From the same fruit. Mace is the powerful flavoured coating and nutmeg the "nut" inside.
