Ethical question about psychologist doing business with client

My father is seeing a psychologist in the US (Arizona). I recently found out that she has told him about a side business she recently started where she makes clothing from bamboo. He then went and bought several items of her clothing for his fiancee as a gift.

This seems like the perfect example of a "dual relationship", which to me seems like a major ethical breach. Can anyone who knows more about the ethical guidelines of US psychologists weigh in on this so I can get a better sense of whether I'm right or not? I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,
Greg

@sentenza212,
Sounds super unethical to me and I haven't even checked any guidelines. She's taking advantage of a relationship in which he is vulnerable, to sell him her stuff. If he's seeing her through a hospital, contact them. If not, contact the Arizona Psychological Association - http://www.azpa.org/ - and tell them what's going (and also go to them if contacting the hospital doesn't get you anywhere).

I would, if I were you, talk to my father beforehand, though. If he is getting good help from her then he needs to get a heads up that the side business is unkosher - and that you are looking to do something about that as you fear he is being taken advantage of.

I would ask who brought up this subject matter. If he was looking for this very unique kind of clothing I would not have an objection.

But if she made the initial suggestion, then it would be of concern.

Is the family concerned with dementia or compulsive spending?

@PUNKEY,
I agree. I would be especially concerned if instead of buying a few garments, he started investing in the company.

I bought a used car (a Volvo) from my doctor once, he even said that as I was his patient he would leave the stereo in. It was one of those old Volvos that go on for ever. It was cheap in 1990 but I think people collect them now. I never thought for a minute that it was unethical.
