and for a change a bit of canadian history .
"the priest visiting on a friday before christmas catching some 'quebecois' peasants having meat for dinner !"
notice the fellow in the foreground feeding his meat to the dog - could also be the hamburgers feeding bailey and cleo at table against "strict orders" of you know who ... ... <GRIN>

http://www.mcq.org/Nouvelle-France/accessible/i/krieghoff.jpg

by cornelius krieghoff circa 1850 .
krieghof was a "commercial" painter selling his paintings to feed his family -
now the paintings sell upwards of $100,000 !

@farmerman,
farmerman :

if quebec cuisine cheers you up , look at the treat i prepared for francis , but better stay away from it if you have a "delicate" digestive system .
it was not christmas time , but mrs h and i thought it was quite a "culinary arts treat" .

They wait
Wide eyed and expectant
In a season where good things come
From the darkest places

They know
From the dull comes excitement
From frowns comes laughter
And soon those who oppressed and restricted
Will join and smile and encourage and play.

He stands
Before them and smiles
Allowing their hope to grow
Filling their hearts.
Behind their eyes he can see it
A joy unmistakable
Waiting
Shaking
Leaning forward
Ready to breakout across their faces with one word:

“Christmas!”

@CalamityJane,
thanks , cj !
i know buxtehude well . a schoolbuddy of mine lived there . took some pictures of the old houses (fachwerkhaueser) .

here is a picture of a monument to honour the "fishwives" in nearby STADE an der elbe . in the olden days there were many fishing families - the men went fishing in the north-sea and the wifes sold the fish (in assigned spots) .
i still have a soft spot in my heart for the "fishwife" that would deliver fresh fish to my parent's house weekly . it sure was a hard job pushing one of those handcarts loaded with fish and ice for hours on end going from customer to customer .

@ehBeth,
Ah that sounds so beautiful, ehbeth. You gave me the idea to look at youtube
for some Advents song to play. My daughter just lit all candles, and a song
will be nice along....

Apropos fishwife: do you know "Agnes Browne"? A tale of 2 fishwives in
Ireland. Great, great movie with Angelica Houston.

Not my favourite Buxtehude, but certainly seasonably appropriate

Dietrich Buxtehude - "Befiehl dem Engel, dass er kommt"

(I do love the cello in there)

Friday night I enjoyed

Quote:
The Praetorius Christmas Vespers

Singers, violins, cornetti, sackbuts, theorbos and keyboards arranged around the balconies and stage of Trinity-St. Paul’s Church, recreating the joyful celebration of Christmas Vespers as it might have been heard under the direction of Michael Praetorius in 17th-century Germany - this lavish Toronto Consort Yuletide offering has become a beloved Toronto tradition. In the spirit of celebration, the audience will join with the assembled musical forces in singing favourite Christmas carols. A Christmas concert like no other!

"our" second piece was an audience participation version of

This event is one of the highlights of the season for me.

One of these days I'm going to get to those Christmas markets, and those cafes - and then look for a white Christmas somewhere! I just want to see it before I check out.

Seem a bit strange, though - no cricket, no mangoes, no beach! Odd sort of Christmas!
