@Leadfoot,
In other words, I was in part, agreeing with you that the argument of 'Because there is 'Something', it does not necessarily mean anything like a 'Cause'.
OTOH, it doesn’t rule it out.
Both of these guys are wrong, or better, both have a point. To state that Christian traditions have not influenced European and Western values bluntly is just plain wrong, but similarly trying to make the case that these values are special to the Western case is a step too far. Christian tradition permeates our culture, as in the past, now even on the global stage with the exportation of modern Western culture through it's scientific breakthroughs in the XIX and XX century, I have no quarrel with that, but it is also true that Humanism is far older than Christian dictums... The same goes for things like Liberalism or Conservativism which are not inventions of modern politics.
The thing is, intellectual debates tend to a dualistic contrast monochromatic thinking mode of opposing views on which X or Y scholar's reputation is at stake as neither side is willing to compromise one inch to the other...rather boring cliché because it happens all over the place whatever is the topic at hand. Anyway, the staggering contrast is boring but the debate is not I promise you!
