Lots of things to debunk here from both perspectives. First yes phenomena are no less real than Noumena or whatever is the case regarding a transcendental substance underlying our experience. But on the other hand lack of free-will really push us to think that the so-called "mental space" is not special in Phenomenology. We could make a case for all sorts of phenomena with any embodied cognitive system including "artificial" ones or other systems that are not even considered alive or aware but still process information and transform it. That is to mean we cannot ditch nor deny that the mathematical structures underlying the exchange of information between 2 systems in which inputs and outputs occur really exist, they are not a sort of fabrication. In fact, the broader definition of computation is precisely the result of these interactions. No special case for Consciousness as far as I can see. There is a distinction to be made between "we volitionally produce phenomena" which is wrong to the more generalized idea that phenomena occur/correlate when two mathematical interacting structures process information.

This is one of those podcasts that really sheds light on the importance of Philosophy in Science...it goes well with my signature! Wink

@Fil Albuquerque,
Lawrence Krauss recently said that we got to redefine the meaning of Nothingness because we learned more about it...
(what a marvelous naive statement that was hehehe Very Happy)
My rebutal was simple...we don't get to redefine Nothingness for the same reason we don't get to redefine the meaning of the word Meaning... while its true that language evolves it never does regarding absolute terms.

@Fil Albuquerque,
Consciousness remains a mystery, perhaps because the only tool we have to trully understand things is, well, consciousness. Maybe the tool cannot work on itself.

@Fil Albuquerque,
PS - ...oh and before some technocrat comes to explain to me the new meaning of nothingness from quantum fluctuations, pairs of virtual particles, and negative energy, yes I am aware of them...nonetheless as I said is stunning that a renown scientist can make a fool of himself in such a big way.

@Fil Albuquerque,
I agree he's on an interesting track(s). Still i haven't seen him touch on the issue of the ego, ie the ghost in the machine that we are or seem to be.
