Doesn't look too bad Walter- let's hope so anyway.

BTW the missus & I just got back in from seeing "The Quiet American" starring Michael Caine, about Vietnam 1951-1954, very well filmed and quite interesting. A good film.

Walter, I have your email address, but not the others. Do you think we should also get KP's? c.i.

I could handle that - I've got it, too, c.i.

McTag

I only posted that in case it lasts a little bit longer, someone exactly THEN has a special question .... well, actually I'm looking for any dixieland band playing around at that time ....

Walt
I'm sure we could find you a dixieland band-
although London is so cool, the main jazz venues will be playing something more modern-
so a look in the suburbs might bear fruit-
if you are serious, I'll enquire further.

Jazz on a Friday in Manchester, obviously no problem (since this is one of the homes of jazz)

As an aside, and a quiz question, and the loser buys the first drink-

Why was dixieland or Dixie so called? Where did the name come from?

Well, the name comes from the French word "dix" (ten), has something to do with coins [no time to look it up] and was first used in Jazz by "The Original Dixieland Jass Band". ["True" Americans" will believe, it derives from the 'Dixon line'.)

How Dixieland got its name

I did already look up all the special sites - you are so right about the Manchester situation

You want to know, McTag, how much money you'll have to put aside until the meeting? Laughing

Anybody working on date, place, and time of our Group Meeting?
Since I'll be in London from March 18 to the 23rd (I'm leaving on the 24th), I'll be open to some other gatherings. I'll be busy on March 19 eve to go see Bombay Dreams, and now working on trying to get tickets for We Will Rock You on the 21st. c.i.

c.i.

It is thought to be the 20th - exactly, when I arrive.

(I've looked it up: my last train from Liverpool Station is about midnight, so I'll can't stay that long - or take the first at 5am and something.)

Walter, I need your help. I'm trying to install webcam software, but the only place I can find freeware is through a German company. Which one do I need to download from the following list?

Actually, c.i., that doesn't look like webcam sofware at all. It's a list of categories - I guess, 'Multimedia & Player'. (If you send me the link by PM, I could perhaps give some better advice.)

My dear London friends: any further, concrete plans re. place of the meeting?

Wasn't it you who asked me for details about a pub you knew in London?

http://www.pubs.com/chesec4.htm

we could meet there, as a suggestion. I've never been myself, but you as a regular can show us the ropes!

Steve
That's brilliant, I've always wanted to go there.

Gautam, it's your suggestion for a meet I think (isn't that so? My memory is not as reliable as it should be...) so do you want to suggest an alternative? Or is the Cheshire Cheese OK for all?

Steve, As I recall, the pub itself is very small. I've never been to any of the hard to find cubie holes. You are going to join in the London Gathering are you not on the 20th? I'm arriving on the 18, have evening show reservations for both the 19 and 21. I'm leaving on the 24th. Otherwise, my days are free. c.i.

Actually, I wanted to invite all of you for a "Warsteiner" - but unfortunately:
Quote:
Die Jagerhutte (now closed), 36 Queensway, Bayswater, London W2 3RX. Tel: (020) 7229 7941 [map] Sadly, this fairly traditionally styled German restaurant serving Kutscher Alt, Schneider Weisse, Dortmunder Union Original on tap and Warsteiner Premium closed in 2002.

There's always the Weatherspoons pub I discovered east of Holborn tube station on High Holborn.
Its quite big
It's not too touristy
Its not too dear by London standards
It serves food (after a fashion, Walter)
It has alcove-type seating areas
Weatherspoons Pubs don't play musak or juke boxes (and this is good for me, because my hearing is bad, and these things are troublesome to me)

But
Its a bit modern
It might be out of the way for some (but it's near Lincolns Inn Fields)
I don't know whether it'll be busy or not (but I suspect it won't be)

So there's a possibility.

Where's Gautam?

McTag, I'm kinda deaf too, so Weatherspoons sounds ideal for me. If you can get the address to us, I can find it on the map. If everybody agrees, all we need to do is set the time. c.i.

Thinking of "Penderel's Oak", McTag?
("A bit pricey for a Wetherspoons" - "Famous person you might expect to drink in this pub: Derek Nimmo)
link for Penderel's Oak

Now, the link works fine!http://www.professorharbottle.co.uk/pub/londoncity/penderel/penderel1.jpg

WOW !!! Our participant list seems to be growing !! Am so damn excited to see that Steve, McTag and CI have decided to join in what is promised to be the event of the year Wink

I am pretty okay with places which are being suggested. As I mentioned somewhere, it is the company which counts - though in a pub, we might not be able to get any decent food (I hate pub food, but then that is just me)

Sorry, had been away on vacation last week (no where exotic, just my house which is being extended and redecorated)
