If I may be dlowed to dlgress to a very interesting lady...

I am not interested in the afterlife. Religion is supposed to be about losing your ego, not preserving it eternally in optimum conditions.

Sharp lady. I like this one:

Quote:
An eye for an eye is about limiting vengeance. You can only take an eye out for an eye; you may not kill someone for knocking out your eye. It means restraining tribal violence, and it is in the Koran.

You know, walking around and picking wildflowers of ideas, binding them in a bouquet, and putting them on a shelf of my mind to dry out and sit in tribute to their former fecundity.

Yes, that idea took me by surprise. Yet once read, it seems rather evident.

It really does. Turns it on its ear for me, certainly, since I'm so accustomed to the US fundie interpretation. But if you think of it in context, it really is a limitation -- one that might have been helpful in the House of Atreus, for instance...

just another thought here, when I was a child growing up in Muslim Saudi Arabia I was told that "eye for an eye" meant that if someone took your eye then they must become your eye, in effect using their sight to replace the sight they took from you, just as we use seeing-eye dogs.

Huh. I say, huh. If they take your life, do they then have to live it?

um, just a guess but I would think that those taking a life would then be obligated to "make up for" the life they took in some fashion however, Muslim law requires the death penality for murder so I'm not sure how that would fit in.

it's interesting.

complete sidelight, but my sister's stepkid's new best friend is a muslim, and now she's all bugged out because the guy got in a heated argument with a sikh about some point of religion or other which ended up being a fight.

C'mon Deb - get skates on towards Melbourne!

It'll be mega - in a very re-feeened sort of way, of course! There'll be Olga, slim, fit and active, me - the exact opposite of all the above, and you - your little hopping happy self!

Call in all favours! I'll buy you a drink!

So - just how MANY eyes were taken, back in the Old East, that there was so much concern about the whole damn thing anyway?

I mean, how many people do you know who have taken an eye? Or had one taken?

Much ado about nothing, if you ask me!!!!

Margo - I would love to - but I canna be in mor edebt. I find out if the hotel will refund today, I think - if not, well, we will see.

God I feel dumb! Fancy not realising i was overdrawn like that? And why didn't i find out BEFORE I made the booking, not after?

One of my childhood friends was blind in one eye from being shot with a bb gun. He didn't get the other kid's eye, but he did get about $60K (in trust) out of the settlement.

Canna - just got mega assertive with hotel - don't have enough money for food and petrol for the next fortnight!!!!! They're being bastids, I think. Manager calling tonight. Got a number of folk offering money to manage this stooooooooooooooooopid temporary embarrassment - but I am refusing - I deserve some punishment for the dumbness!!!!

Good side is I CAN defer - it is just that they want to know exact dates, and want to charge me money any time I alter them - I think that is unreasonable. They won't take full amount out until I stay - which is great - and relieves the food/petrol situation......doh!!!!!

I have so never been this careless before. I thought we got wiser with age? Can I blame the whole three jobs in one week thing, do you think? Temporary insanity???

Care to look at a new time, goils? Mebbe next Easter? When I am cleverer? I don't mean Margo doesna go now - but another time when Margo can afford to go again?
