What's a "secondment"? Kind of like a leave of absence?

Sorta - it is within the public sector, so it is an admin reshuffle - people are sort of entitled to them, when they have been somewhere for a while - but it is at management discretion. I fully understand Helen's (my boss') position. I COULD paly hardball - but I wouldna do it to my team - I will have a chat to the Minister (as in government Minister, not religious!) who asked me to come and work for her - she might be able to do a little leaning...

I am starting to like our federal Opposition leader - Mark Latham - right winger though he is, for the sorta almost left wing Labor Party.

He is promising to close down the very lavish prime Ministerial residence in Sydney, Kirribilli House, if elected - (The PM has an official residence in Canberra as well, called The Lodge - the current PM does not formally live there, he formally lives in Kirribilli House becasue, as scurrilous rumour has it, his wife refuses to live in the same city as his mistress, but I digress) - and hand it over to the state government for public use.

He was asked by the media where he would stay when in Sydney, if he becomes Prime Minister - (he was raised in a working class suburb in Sydney) - he paused for a moment, thought about it, and said "I guess I'll doss with my mum."

Looks like he's winning over the electorate too, thank heavens. We might finally get rid of the putrid little piece of slime we've got now.

Hey, sorry to hear that. Best of luck with the Minister.

I've been bumping into bits on your Mr. Latham. Keep us appraised about him, would you.

Well, speaking of Latham - now he wants to curtail the federal politicians' superannuation scheme, and has forced the government to agree - hmmmmmm - also says we should read to our kids more....

And - think of us here on our Saturday - Friday for most of you - worst fire alert conditions for years. Hot, stinking northerlies (straight from the desert), huge fuel load. We have already alerted other states we may need help.....

There aren't many crystal clear correlatives in educational research, but the relationship between reading to children and their later literacy/'success'/self-esteem is one.

Regarding your dangerous dry situation there...I've been praying for twenty minutes now...any change?

Hmmm... I used to know a lot of California forestry firefighters, but I don't think they'd go that far even if I told 'em to. Similar problem with sending you our snow...

LOL! We went to New Mexico a few years ago..TRUE!!!!! And California, I think. You're just not trying!

Actually - we get in your big water helicopters...

Speaking of which, we had a Blackhawk helicopter go down yesterday - 8 people aboard. All survived....one fella has spinal injuries, though. How often does that happen?

The surviving of a helicopter accident, I mean - not the spinal injuries.

Hmmm - he is a real rightie for a sorta left wing party.

It's gonna be an interesting ride.

At least he has the current PM on the hop! A nice thing to see...

Both - but not in the way somebody would be right in the USA.

He is to the right in a social democratic party - albeit one that is moving right - or has been.
