This is reminiscent of gopher tortoises in the southeast and Florida. The gopher tortoise is a keystone species in the longleaf pine ecosystem. The Longleaf Pine is dependent on regular fires to keep from succeeding into oak. Many animals--including diamondback rattlesnakes--regularly seek refuge in gopher tortoise burrows and are protected during the fires that sweep across the landscape.

Is there a link to the paper sculptor's studio? They are fascinating, I gotta larn how he does the production. It looks like layering for the flat solid surfaces like the bison's nose or the hedgehogs feet and face
