Kudos to Fbaezer! However, my stats indicate that I am also at 10-5. Where did I go wrong, johnboy?
The refs are reviewing the play, cowdoc. Back after this commerical break.
My apologies, Cowdoc. You did indeed change your picks in the Wash-Phil game AND in the Carolina-Atlanta game (good decisions). I failed to record the second change, so you join Dragon, Johnboy and El-diablo at 10-5.
It is going to be a bit embarrassing for some when I report the week's results tomorrow morning.
I changed my picking ritual this week and paid heavily for it.
Kudos to the 10 and 5 crowd...
jets won, hurting their draft chances...
pates almost went to OT with the backup QB...
did anyone catch flutie's drop kick? 1st one since 1941!!
Flutie is 43 years old. He has had a fine career in the NFL. He wasn't the greatest quarterback to play the game, but he was good. Certainly better than you or I, and many of his peers.
So this drop-kick thing may have been a bit orchestrated. Punctuation to end with an exclamation mark rather than with a mere period. I have no problem with that.
LIke a good football team, Fbaezer peaks at the end of the season. He wins the last two weeks of the year. Oddly, Region won the first two weeks.
For Week 17, Fbaezer came in at (12-4). At (10-6) were Dragon, Johnboy, Cowdoc and El-Diablo. Region, Panzade, George and Ray finished at (9-7). Liontamerx stumbled a bit, managing only to break even at (8-8). And at (7-9) were Jpinmilw and Child. The best expert on ESPN was 11-5.
I was really rooting for Dragon or Ray. They were the only two players who did not win at least once during the regular season.
So the Certificate Suitable For Framing in the A2K NFL Picking Thingee for number of weekly wins goes to ... Cowdoc!
He had wins in Weeks #5, #12, and #14. Well done.
Fbaezer, Child, Region and JPinmilw each won twice. Gus, Panzade, Liontamerx, George , Johnboy and El-diablo tasted the sweet nectar of victory once.
Is this exciting, or what?
In the Cumulative Wins Minus Losses category, the season winner is...Cowdoc. He finishes with a score of (+88). Liontamerx falters at the end (+82) but ends up above Johnboy (+80). I have Panzade (+75), Fbaezer (+74) and then Region (+66), El-diablo (+59), George (+58), Jpinmilw (+50), Child (+46), Dragon (+44) and Ray (+26).
As a group, we were +30 for the week. Not too good.
Congratulations, Cowdoc. At least I save a bit on postage by being able to put both certificates in the same envelope.
The best pickers on ESPN, by the way, were in the +100 range. Many of us had bad weeks at the beginning of the season and, of course, many of yall, despite my imporing, missed a week or two. And there were those darned hurricanes that were a bit of a nuisance.
To recap:
Fbaezer wins Week #17
Cowdoc wins the certificate for most number of weekly wins
Cowdoc wins the certificate for the number of wins minus losses.
Thanks for participating. -rjb-
I am still seeking suggestions on how yall want to go through the play-offs leading up to the Super Bowl. This coming weekend (Jan 7 and 8) there are four Wild Card games (Wash @ Tampa Bay; Jacksonville @ New England; Carolina @ NY Giants and Pittsburgh @ Cincinnati) We could choose just those four or we could go for the whole enchilada as I wrote before:
And then we get into the playoffs!
I looked back at last year (pages 30-45 or so on this thread) to see how we ran it. Panzade suggested-and we went with-a scheme whereby, prior to the start of the first play-off game, we would choose all the way through to the Super Bowl (with that game being the tiebreaker re total points). That is where the big prize is: the coveted Golden Jockstrap trophy.
Last year there was a lot of chatter/banter/wishful thinking/second guessing etc. It seemed to work well.
Please let me know any preference you may have.
I will admit that USC has more offensive talent than Texas, because it's hard to beat Leinhart and Bush. However, USC's defense has not impressed me much this year at all. For USC it seems to be a game of who can score more and since they have such an awesome offense, they have always won (although, I was upset with the end of the ND game, but it's in the past). I am hoping that Vince Young can really give USC's seemingly lacking defense a serious run for their money and that Sweed can catch some amazing passes! However, if we can't contain Reggie Bush, its all over I think.
I was glad to see I at least got into the top 5 last week! I am not such a close follower of NFL as I said before, I am a much bigger college follower. However, this was a lot of fun, I truly enjoyed it, it gave me a reason to yell at the TV yet again...
Gotta love football...too bad Mr. D isn't a huge fan like myself...
no prob going with last year's scheme (why recreate the wheel?)
didn't panz have a superbowl predictions thread at the beginning of the year?

i knew i liked you...
i tell you this ND-OSU game is getting good-brady quinn looks amazing...
Okay. So if we are going to go with the format that we did last year; we had better get started. I know the games in the Wild-Cards coming up but I could sure use some help in laying out what happens after that. Any assistance would be appreciated, and please make it quickly. I will spend 11 hours on Thursday on a sad trip flying from VA to Portland, OR, and another 11 back to VA on Monday.
I could use someone pitching in to keep this going. Thanks.
If memory serves me correctly, after the wild card games, the highest ranked team hosts the lowest ranked remaining team. Thus, the Colts would be at home playing New England and Denver would host the Bengals if both home teams win, but the lower ranked team would go to Indy if either or both of the road teams win. Right?
Assuming my previous post is accurate, then the conference rankings are:
AFC NFC
1. Indianapolis Seattle
2. Denver Chicago
3. Cincinnati Tampa Bay
4. New England New York Giants
5. Jacksonville Carolina
6. Pittsburgh Washington
Anybody disagree with that?
I am told that, as Cowdoc noted, the matchups for the rest of the play-offs will not be known until after the Wild Card games. There simply are too many permutations for us to consider.
Accordingly, I have decided to wait until after this coming weekend before getting into picking through to the Super Bowl.
We have only four games to pick in this Wild-Card cycle. This works well for me, as it turns out, as I will be gone to Portland Thursday through Monday.
Since we have finished the regular season and won't begin the big push to the end until after the four games this weekend, I won't get upset if some of yall decide to take this weekend off (I never thought I'd say something like that). But you have to remember to come back after that.
So here are the four Wild-Card games and, just to goose it up a bit, please consider all four of them tiebreakers. Predict the winners and the total number of points in EACH game. I haven't quite figured out how to do the scoring yet, but I'll come up with something and post it tomorrow.
Sat 1/7 - 4:30 pm:
Washington (10-6 for the season) @ Tampa Bay (11-5)
8:00 pm:
Jacksonville (12-4) @ New England (10-6)
Sun 1/8 - 1:00 pm:
Carolina (11-5) @ NY Giants (11-5)
4:30 pm:
Pittsburgh (11-5) @ Cincinnatti (11-5)
Remmember please: pick the winners and predict the total number of points in EACH OF THE FOUR GAMES.
And enjoy your nag-free week!
Washington (24)
New England (42)
NY Giants (42)
Cincinnatti (49)
Tampa Bay (34)
New England (45)
Carolina (40)
Pittsburgh (30)
Tampa Bay-45
New England-52
Carolina-28
Pittsburgh-56
