i was actually very surprised at how well oakland played. at the half being 17-14 i was very happy. i know they didn't win, and i picked NE, but oakland is my team so i have to be happy they played so well. i was excited to see them actually have both a running and passing game, now if some one on defense would actually do something...

Week 1: The I'm Not Out Of Step; Everyone Else Is Out Of Step Award.

So we ended up with 10 players for this weekend's games. I was surprised that OccumBill didn't join in and I was sorry to hear from kickycan (who started this thread) that he has a lot of other things going on right now and probably wouldn't play much.

I mentioned that I had a new little amusement added this year that originally bore the title "The Deviant of the Week Award." That was the working title, but I have since toned it down to the one in the title of this post. Using this week (with 10 players) it works like this: I subtract the minority number of folks who chose one team from the majority number who chose the other team and those folks in the minority get assigned those points. So if one player chose team A and nine players chose team B, that player would get 8 points (9-1). If four players chose team C and 6 chose team D, those four players would each get 2 points (6-4).

A high score is not "bad" but merely indicates that a player is, to use yet another metaphor, further out on a limb.

This week's scores follow...

yup, george, you got 8 for picking TN and another 8 for being the lone picker of Dallas; six for going for Detroit and Baltimore, four for going against the grain with your pick of KC, and 2 points for choosing Chicago, New Orleans, and Houston. You piled up points quicker than a sailor on shore leave picks up beers.

el-diablo: you were in a world of your own with your choices of Miami and Cleveland. You and George were out in left-field with Detroit. The rest of your points came from minor differences.

I will refrain from this particular competition, knowing that I would easily win and cause the majority of you to question your football knowledge.

I consider this a noble gesture on my part.

You should have seen the post that I edited out, gus, deciding that a reference to Mr Bush was not appropriate in this trivial game. Suffice it to say that you seem to talk tall but walk small. Hell, we'll give you (and anyone else) a point for the Thursday night win by NE even though you didn't pick.
But what say you now, oh swampdweller, about the rest of the weekend's games?

Thanks, gus. His picks, by the way were not too far away from the middle of the pack. He joined a couple other folks in picking Detroit over Green Bay (imagine that) and Baltimore over Indy. And he became the only other member of the panel besides johnboy to pick Atlanta over Philly.

Yall saw here what lengths johnboy sometimes has to go through to pull in players. That swamp water around gus's place was deep, it smelled to high heaven and I swear he knows every alligator around there and has them trained to listen to him.

But Gus makes #11 and I still have 15 hours to go!

WEEK #! SCHEDULE AND CALL FOR ENTRIES!!!

Here are the games yall need to predict. Note that the first game is Thursday, September 8th, so I need to get your selections prior to kick-off of that game. You can change your guesses at anytime prior to the first game (johnboy buys white-out by the 55-gallon drum).
The format is Visitor @ Home Team with last year's (regular season records).

Thursday Sept 8:
---New England (14-2) @ Oakland (5-11)
Sunday Sept 11 - Early Games:
---Minnesota (8-8) @ Tampa Bay (5-11)
---Miami (4-12) @ Denver (10-6)
---Pittsburgh (15-1) @ Tennessee (5-11)
---Washington (6-10) @ Chicago (5-11)
---New Orleans (8-8) @ Carolina (7-9)
---Jacksonville (9-7) @ Seattle (9-7)
---Buffalo (9-7) @ Houston (7-9)
---Cleveland (4-12) @ Cincinatti (8-8)
---Kansas City (7-9) @ NY Jets (10-6)
Sunday Sept 11 - Late Games:
---Detroit (6-10) @ Green Bay (10-6)
---San Diego (12-4) @ Dallas (6-10)
---San Francisco (2-14) @ St Louis (8-8)
---NY Giants (6-10) @ Arizona (6-10)
Sunday Sept 11 - Night Game:
---Baltimore (9-7) @ Indianapolis (12-4)
Monday Sept 12:
---Atlanta (11-5) @ Philadelphia (13-3)

16 games in all. The information I need in your public post is the winner of each of the games plus the total number of points that you think will be scored in the Monday night game. So the format of your post could be as simple as: "NE, MN ....PHIL (35). I do ask that you check over your list to be sure that you have made a selection in each game and have indicated how many points the two teams combined will score in the tiebreaker. Then hit submit.

Thanks for playing. New players are certainly welcome to participate.
Good luck to everyone - johnboy.

It is NOT to late to play. I am giving everyone the New England game over Oakland (although it was a pretty close game Thursday night), But that is all the slack I am cutting. The deadline for picks is kick-off time on Sunday. Please join us.
