the meaning of "ever"

Reply Sun 19 Mar, 2017 12:17 am
Nothing ever happens here in the evening.

ever means at any time in this case. But here already a specific time, evening, has been mentioned. So why the word ever has been used here? Is it possible to rewrite this sentence?

This sentence has been taken from the following link.

@Nousher Ahmed,
The sentence is fine and does not to be changed. "In the evening" is not a specific time. It is a period of several hours. One can also say

Nothing ever happens here on Sundays.
Nothing ever happens here in September.
Nothing ever happens here between 1 PM and 4 PM.

@Nousher Ahmed,
The "ever" bit alludes to a pattern in the evenings. Not only is not redundant but is a fundamental informative element on the sentence.

@Nousher Ahmed,
Its an adverb describing happens and tells "when".

You can say "something rarely happens" or "nothing really happens"

I don't know why I got a thumb down for a concise and correct answer.

@centrox,
It's because there is a excess of puerile weenies here.

You have a fan, you should be happy.

I sometimes wonder if A2K has programmed in an automatic thumbs down to any post I make. No matter what thread, its seems that any post I make is "immediately" downvoted.

Kiddo. I get a thumbs down for a posting photos of beautiful animals. I don't think that the thumb has anything to do with the content of the post. Some people are just thumby.

There won't be. Dale has invented that initialism (I expect he might even think of it as an acronym) to designate those who criticise any of his posts, which he equates to being "angry about nearly everything".

Da, I just love this wonderful phrase which you have created! Smile Yes, I must say that forums and blogs usually feature at least one TAATANE person, often more. I've met more than my share. Of course, I now wish I hadn't. I used to think A2K had the worst TAATANE persons in the whole Internet, but I was wrong. A few of these other TAATANEs have gotten really angry with me at times simply because I didn't agree with them. Perhaps I've brought it on myself sometimes; but, really, it amazes me that some people are so full of anger! I mean, where does it come from? Crying or Very sad

This is such a sad moment that I must post a You Tube video that is appropriate and hopefully helpful to those of us who are distressed by this terrible situation.

There, that's better.

By the way, how could anyone ever down-thumb Roberta, who doesn't deserve to be down-thumbed ever. Seriously! I'm indignant.

@wmwcjr,
Thanks, Biill, there oughta be more of you

I've continually updated these two lists, 'Good Guys' and 'Not,' so I have added wmwc to the former

Score presently 25/23, or around 50/50. But don't you find it remarkable how these two categories differ so radically
