Postgame police projectile kills an Emerson student

An Emerson College junior, drawn to Fenway Park to toast the first Red Sox pennant in 18 years, was killed yesterday, shot in the eye by a projectile fired by police seeking to disperse revelers who authorities said threatened to spin out of control.

Victoria Snelgrove, a 21-year-old journalism student from East Bridgewater, was struck by a pepper-spray-filled plastic ball at about 1:30 a.m., some 90 minutes after the Red Sox celebrated on the infield at Yankee Stadium, provoking an estimated 80,000 jubilant and mostly young fans to converge on Kenmore Square.

Did you see the Boston Herald today? I saw the cover on the news - I cannot believe how much in bad taste it is. I hear that inside there is an even worse picture.

Police boost forces for Series start
Officials weigh suspension of pepper-gun use

Boston police said yesterday they are prepared to make mass arrests to prevent disturbances from turning violent after tonight's first game of the World Series. Authorities also said they will probably suspend use of pepper-pellet guns that officers fired during a wild celebration early Thursday outside Fenway Park, fatally injuring an Emerson College student.

Only one positive thing has come out of this awful tragedy -- no attempt whatever to cover up. That, I think, would have been the automatic reaction by Boston's Finest just a couple of years ago. Under our new Police Commissioner, the police immediately took full responsibility for the tragic event, with no "We don't know what happened, it's under investigation" nonsense. Bostonians are so used to the cops stonewalling that this admission of police misfeasance is a breath of fresh air.

These pellets seem pretty dangerous to me - here is a picture of one person who said he was hit 12 times in the body and once in the face.
