It never occurred to me that we should do anything to stop what is obviously a religious belief in another country, another culture.

I've done some further research and my question regarding the Koran has been answered to my satisfaction. There are some people of Islamic beliefs that think parts of the Koran does indeed need to be changed. How strange. I can't imagine changing the Bible, but I suppose that's apples and oranges?

<<Showing ignorance of Koran. Back to research.

BTW...my dad's a medical doc and he doesn't believe in abortion. Not all docs do.

There are several parts of the Bible that Christians (and Jews) don't follow any more. They inlclude...

Killing people who work on Saturday...

The law of Moses (Numbers 15) wrote:

While the Israelites were in the desert, a man was found gathering wood on the Sabbath day. Those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole assembly, and they kept him in custody, because it was not clear what should be done to him. Then the LORD said to Moses, "The man must die. The whole assembly must stone him outside the camp." So the assembly took him outside the camp and stoned him to death, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Keeping women silent in Church

The apostle Paule (1 Corinthians 14) wrote:

... women should remain silent in the churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission, as the Law says. If they want to inquire about something, they should ask their own husbands at home; for it is disgraceful for a woman to speak in the church.

Not resisting evil.

Jesus (Matt 5) wrote:

But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

These are all things that not many take seriously any more. All religions, including Christianity, adapt to fit the times.

We don't stone women on their wedding night if they don't appear to be a virigin. We don't kill homosexuals or witches, even though all of these things are in the Bible.

So it is not just Muslims, Christians are changing the parts of the Bible that don't fit any more. What a shame... <<goes off to find a suitable rock to throw>>

In all due respect I agree with much of what you have said... The Holy Bible has changed with culture in many instances. Thanks to Jesus and Paul the apostle and even today's modern times have shed new light and brought about needed tolerance.

The Holy Bible doesn't not tell women to be silent in the church...

It tells the "wives of the prophets" to be silent.. This is only while the prophets are speaking to the people. They are not to contradict the prophets while they are talking to the people. The can take their husbands aside and speak to them in private so as not to embarrass them publicly.

I am reminded of Tammy Fae Baker when she used to interrupt her husband with a constant "but honey" in front of the whole world. This also goes for the husbands of the female prophets. They should keep silent "in the church too". Smile

There's hope for those poor women, then. Good.

Wife Beating in Saudia Arabia
Yes, it's interesting how the Muslim fundamentalists, including women, say that they are being protected by the strict laws that include dress code, not associating with men who are not their relatives or husbands - and they even say that they are not as victimized like Western women in terms of sexual or physical abuse! I guess they don't like to talk about honor killings, but then, "real Muslim" people don't do those kind of things.

To compare, there is a faction in this country among strict Christian fundamentalists, who also champion modest dress, head coverings, women keeping quiet in church and not "teaching men", keeping quiet if they are being beaten by their husbands, and being completely submissive to their husbands. They are called Christian Reconstructionists, and they trying to grow their influence with large families, getting involved with stealth politics, and so on. They are the Christian version of extremist Islam, and they aim to be an influential part of this country's politics.

Yes. A prophet of religious greed and tax evasion.

Not only do Saudis beat their wives, but they also learn to fly commercial jet aircraft in order to fly them into buildings.

Or so we've been told...

I thought this was quite funny also. ebrown_p did not say that the Bible had changed. The point made was that there are portions that many do not take seriously any more. The text that authorizes the killing of witches, homosexuals, adulterers, disobedient children, etc. are still there.

Which, ironically enough, is the same thing you would do if you were in Texas.

Re: wife-beating in Saudi Arabia, wasn't there a really famous Saudi female TV presentor who was repeatedly, violently beaten by her husband and then came out and showed her face on TV?

From what I remember reading about it, it was a hugely brave move on her part, that really appears to have kickstarted the modest beginnings of a long-repressed open discussion of domestic violence in the country.

Can I find a link ... <off to Google>

Here we are ... lots of links.

They convicted the husband, too - to 300 or 600 lashes and six months in jail.

Quote:
Unlike most Saudi women, she spoke out publicly about the attack and, even more unusually, the Saudi press reported her words and carried a picture of her badly disfigured face. [..]

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, she said she was speaking out not only on her own behalf but of other Saudi women, to let them know there was redress under sharia (Islamic law) to protect them from domestic violence. "I want to use what happened to me to draw attention to the plight of abused women in Saudi Arabia," she said at the time.
