@farmerman,
Perhaps it's not a good business model in America, but it wouldn't harm sales anywhere else. Even the bloody Tories don't like him.

But he is. He and his fellow authoritarians are making it clear that what is fact and what isn't will be coming from the White House. These are not petty squabbles about crowd numbers, this is a fight about who is in possession of the Truth - which, apparently, is quite independent from the facts.

So therefore, Trump, Bannon, Conway, Spicer, etc. are making it clear that the Truth is only coming from them.

Not from public opinion. Not from the opposition. Not from the press. Not from any government agency.

@old europe,
It's concerning, the use of the phrase 'alternative facts' as shorthand for downright lies explains why there's been a spike in sales of 1984. Historian Simon Schama pointed out Trump's regime is starting out like a lot of authoritarian ones. Let's hope the checks and balances do their job this time.

Truth as distinct from facts. I'll keep an eye out for that in the future. Somehow though, I'm betting that alternative facts will win out.

@roger,
It would depend on the media. Let's see if their credibility grows or falls. The media outside the US is pretty reliable.

Countries whose citizens were involved in the 9/11 terror attacks
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
Egypt
Lebanon

Countries whose citizens are banned from entering America by Trump

Iraq
Syria
Iran
Libya
Somalia
Sudan
Yemen

What's striking is that there is absolutely no overlap whatsoever.

@izzythepush,
Don't expect common sense from our president. Que sera sera.
It started with several things. Ban all Muslims from entering our country. Put a tariff on trade with Mexico. Build a wall. The guy thinks he's the king. He has no knowledge of our Constitution.

@cicerone imposter,
...and as a supposedly successful businessman has shockingly little awareness of the importance of maintaining good relations with our trading partners. I don't wholly blame Trump, after all it was his followers that encouraged his stupidity with their support. He rode that wave of stupidity right to the White House!

@TomTomBinks,
People claim Trump was a successful businessman, but that's not true. He inherited his wealth.

@TomTomBinks,
It's all about appearances, he wants to look tough, but he doesn't want to screw things up completely. So that's why he's targeting the weakest, most vulnerable people.

With the exception of Iran, the countries targeted are ones with refugees fleeing Islamist persecution. These people can't retaliate, and a lot of them are victims. Naming Iran panders to the prejudices of most of his supporters who still see Iran as the bogeyman in the ME.

He doesn't want to harm arms/oil deals with the wealthy gulf states, and ignores the elephant in the room, Wahhabism. This is the hardline form of Islam practiced in Saudi Arabia, and ideologically is very similar to that espoused by IS and Al Qaida.

The real threat to security is Saudi money coming into Western mosques being used to promote that ideology. This edict does nothing to halt that, and I suspect nothing Trump does will. Profits made by his arms dealer buddies are way more important than national security. All this will do is alienate moderate Muslims and make them less likely to share intelligence.

Exactly! The Saudis have been exporting and supporting this interpretation of Islam for a long time. We ignore the real problem and pander to them for the sake of profit.

@TomTomBinks,
Wahhabism and the house of Saud go hand in hand. One of the cries of the American Revolution was no taxation without representation. That's what they have in Saudi Arabia, no taxation and no representation. Oil wealth means you don't need to tax the population so you don't need a parliament. In Qatar they don't have any bills either, water, gas, electricity are all free. I've not checked up but I think this is the case in Saudi Arabia too.

Wahhabism means they can appear as legitimate custodians of the prophet's city. And they can always fly to the West to enjoy sex and drugs and rock and roll while the religious police clamp down on things like women driving and going out unaccompanied.

That's why they need to export this version of Islam to countries not so wealthy like Yemen, and they use Western arms to do this. Democracy is the enemy of autocratic rule, and if it can be seen to work in an Arab Sunni country then the writing will be on the wall for Gulf royalty.

It'll be a one way war. Mexico is much smarter than Trump, and the world will support Mexico, not Trump.

@Lash,
Just because the petition to ban Trump has 1,313,591 signatories and will have to be debated in the Commons doesn't mean Theresa the appeaser has to take any action.

Quote:
However, Downing Street confirmed that Theresa May would not be withdrawing her invitation to the US president because it remained “substantially in the national interest”.

The petition, which falls short of calling for Trump to be banned from the UK, argues that he should not receive a full state visit, including audiences with the royal family, “because it would cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen”.

@izzythepush,
Glad to see the head of state of one of our closest ally speaking out against Trump. Trump is a man-child who doesn't understand what our country stands for. He needs to visit the Statue of Liberty.
