Ashley Smith, a ReOpenNC organizer, was arrested outside of the executive mansion in Raleigh, N.C. on April 28, 2020, during a protest the against the COVID-19 coronavirus restrictions the state has instituted. By Julia Wall

With the ReOpenNC group planning protests in five North Carolina cities on Memorial Day, the husband of one of the group’s founders published a Facebook video that says violence shouldn’t be ruled out.

“Are we willing to kill people? Are we willing to lay our lives down? We have to say yes,” Adam Smith said in a Facebook Live video posted on Friday.

Later in the 17-minute video, he said, “If you bring force, we’re gonna bring force. If you bring guns, we’re gonna bring guns. If you’re armed with this, we’re gonna be armed with this.”

Smith, husband of ReOpenNC founder Ashley Smith of Morganton, took the video down after it was first reported by the Raw Story website. But Ashley Smith reposted the video Sunday afternoon on the ReOpenNC Facebook page.

“Maybe you agree with him and maybe you don’t, but we have nothing to hide,” Ashley Smith wrote on Facebook. “This group is built on the Constitution and that includes free speech and the second amendment. He is simply stating to protect his family and our freedom he is willing to take up arms like our forefathers did.”

Ashley Smith said her husband is an ex-Marine who remains “willing to die for all of you too,” as he was when he was enlisted.

Adam Smith was also present along with other armed Blue Igloo demonstrators in downtown Raleigh on May 16. Blue Igloo is likely a play on the word “Boogaloo,” which the Anti-Defamation League describes as a slang term for a coming civil war.

The ReOpenNC group formed on Facebook on April 7, quickly growing to its current 78,900 members. The group has held numerous protests in downtown Raleigh, near the Legislative Building and the Governor’s Mansion, in opposition to Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive orders aimed at slowing the coronavirus spread.

State Capitol Police arrested Ashley Smith at one of the ReOpenNC rallies in Raleigh for disobeying an executive order. In a video of the incident, Adam Smith calls police “thugs” for arresting her. “Look at these thugs, people, arresting her for walking on the sidewalk,” Adam Smith says.

Even as Cooper relaxed social restrictions on Friday, moving the state into Phase Two of his reopening plan by allowing more businesses to open and restaurants to resume indoor dining at reduced capacity, the group planned Memorial Day “Freedom Rallies” on Monday. The rallies are planned in Charlotte, Asheville, Greensboro, Raleigh and Wilmington at 11 a.m., according to the group’s Facebook page.

The group seeks an end to all social restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected 23,222 people and led to 744 deaths in the state since March.
‘Our founding fathers would not be pleased’

In the Facebook Live video, Adam Smith calls suggestions to wear masks and practice social distancing as part of an “indoctrination” test.

“It is a test run to see how much liberty we’re willing to give up without a fight,” Adam Smith said. “Boy, you know what I say? Not an inch. Not an inch, Mr. Cooper.”

Travis Long [email protected]

While calling anyone who took issue with her husband’s comments “disgraceful,” Ashley Smith said Sunday that he “maybe” could have chosen his words better.

“Could he have said it better?” Ashley Smith said on Facebook. “Maybe, but that’s not for anyone to decide how a free person should speak their mind. Our founding fathers would not be pleased that we gave up so much for so little. Look how hard we are having to fight to get our freedom back!”

Ashley Smith did not respond Sunday to requests for comment.

The News & Observer reached out Sunday to police departments in the five cities where ReOpenNC plans Monday protests.

“I’m not sure if anyone is aware of that video, but the group has a permit to use the space (for the rally),” said Ron Glen, public information officer for the Greensboro Police Department. “We have officers assigned to work that event and enough resources in place to handle that event. We’re not expecting any issues from that group. The organizers have followed the protocol required to be in that area.”

Police from the other four cities have not responded to The N&O.

Staff writer Jonas Pope IV contributed to this report.

So it would be free speech to threaten to kill the bumpkins here on a2k? I don't think so. Freely made, maybe, protected - NOPE.

Some dummies here are as confused about first amendment as they are about the second amendment.

Over here the headlines are dominated by the disgusting behaviour of Johnson's boss, (sorry, chief adviser, easy mistake to make,) Dominic Cummings.

Quote:
The PM's decision to back his chief aide's lockdown trip to Durham has sparked fears that the government's coronavirus message will be undermined.

Some Tory backbenchers have called for Dominic Cummings to resign to ensure public confidence in future measures.

The row comes as the cabinet will meet later to discuss plans to further ease lockdown restrictions.

Education Secretary Gavin Williamson has said Mr Cummings "at no stage broke the law or broke the rules".

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Williamson said that everyone, "whether they are anywhere in the country or working in No 10", was expected to abide by the law.

"That's what the prime minister expects, that's the assurance that he asked for, that is the assurance that he got."

Criticism of Boris Johnson's decision to take no action over Mr Cummings' 260-mile trip to his parents' home has come from all quarters.

As well as Tory backbenchers, senior Church of England bishops and scientists advising ministers on the pandemic have strongly criticised the government's handling of the row.

Acting Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey said it undermined the prime minister's authority on the coronavirus crisis and Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned the consequences of Boris Johnson's decision could be "serious".

Labour has called for an inquiry.

Mr Johnson has defended Mr Cummings, saying he believed his senior aide had "no alternative" but to make the journey from London at the end of March for childcare "when both he and his wife were about to be incapacitated by coronavirus".

Conservative backbencher David Warburton, MP for Somerton and Frome, said Mr Cummings was "damaging the government and the country that he's supposed to be serving".

Speaking on BBC Breakfast, Mr Warburton said: "We've not been offered the chance to interpret the rules, that's really not how it works otherwise there would be complete chaos."

The MP, who said his own father had died alone as a result of the coronavirus lockdown, said "people have made sacrifices" and "in those sacrifices there really hasn't been the choice to use instinct".

He added: "We've been tasked with following regulations laid down by the government."

Another Tory MP, Jason McCartney, said in a Facebook post that while it was important for people to show compassion during the crisis, Mr Cummings had to go because the "perceived hypocrisy of the rule makers potentially threatens the success of any future measures" under a second wave of coronavirus.

Meanwhile, the acting Lib Dem leader said on BBC Breakfast that the prime minister should sack Mr Cummings "so the government has more credibility in what it says about public health".

"The instruction the prime minister gave us all to stay at home has been breached by his top adviser and that's what you can't get away from in this story, its pretty simple," Sir Ed said.

And Ms Sturgeon told the programme that the prime minister was "putting his political interest ahead of the public interest".

"When trust in a public health message and public health advice is as important as it is right now the consequences could be very serious," Scotland's First Minister said.

Former chief constable of Durham Police, Mark Barton, said the prime minister's decision has "now made it exponentially tougher for all those on the frontline enforcing the lockdown".

"We're in the middle of a national emergency and the people who make the rules can't break the rules otherwise we're going to have chaos," he said.

Some of the scientists that advise ministers were concerned the prime minister's decision to back Mr Cummings would undermine the message on controlling the virus.

Stephen Reicher, a professor of social psychology who has advised the government on behavioural science during the pandemic, said the prime minister's backing of Mr Cummings made him feel "dismay".

He said trust was vital to maintaining public health measures. "You can't have trust if people have a sense of them and us, that there's one rule for them and another rule for us," he told the BBC.

And the Bishop of Leeds, the Right Reverend Nick Baines, said Mr Johnson was treating people "as mugs" and the Bishop of Bristol, the Right Reverend Vivienne Faull, accused the prime minister of having "no respect for people".

The prime minister said he held "extensive" discussions on Sunday with Mr Cummings, who he said "followed the instincts of every father and every parent - and I do not mark him down for that".

The Observer and Sunday Mirror reported two further allegations of lockdown breaches by his aide, although Mr Johnson called "some" of the claims "palpably false".

One report alleges that a witness saw Mr Cummings in Barnard Castle, more than 25 miles from Durham, where he had been self-isolating, on 12 April.

Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said he would have sacked Mr Cummings if he were prime minister, and he said Mr Johnson's failure to take action was "an insult to sacrifices made by the British people".

Ministers to publicly support Mr Cummings include the Health Secretary Matt Hancock and Cabinet Office Minister Michael Gove.

But Sir Roger Gale is also among the Conservative backbench MPs to have publicly questioned Mr Cummings' position, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: "It's up to the prime minister to exercise judgement about who he has around him. In this case, I do think that that judgement is flawed."

Another Tory, former minister Paul Maynard, said of Mr Cummings: "It is not as if he was unfamiliar with guidance he himself helped draw up. It seems to me to be utterly indefensible and his position wholly untenable."

Meanwhile, in a statement posted on Twitter, Amanda Hopgood, leader of the Liberal Democrats on Durham County Council, said "a number of local residents have reported seeing Dominic Cummings on several occasions in April and May".

She said that "given the clear public interest" she has referred the matter to Durham Police to see if there had been a breach of the coronavirus regulations.

Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched into a tweet posted on the official UK Civil Service Twitter account, which asked "Can you imagine having to work with these truth twisters?"

The since-deleted message appeared shortly after Mr Johnson's daily news briefing.

Why don't you give this a rest; you trot it out with tiresome regularity. Albright was never a member of the DNC, and Clinton, no longer a senator, is no longer a member. Neither show signs of psychopathic behavior or demonic possession in these, or any other, video clips. They're politicians, and as office holders their salaries were paid with public funds. Get over it.
