Nets Misleadingly Claim U.S. Leads World in COVID-19 Deaths

The networks also failed to put into context that the U.S. is the third most populated country in the world with about 330 million residents, making it not so surprising that there would be a relatively large number of deaths compared to other countries, but, on a per capita basis, most countries in Western Europe of significant size have higher per capita reported death rates from the virus than the U.S.

As of Sunday, April 12, the per capita number of deaths in the U.S. stands at 6.61 deaths per 100,000 residents, in contrast with the United Kingdom where the per capita rate comes to 15.84 and, in France, where it is 21.48. The total number of deaths officially linked to COVID-19 in the U.K. and France are currently 10,612 and 14,393, respectively, and each of those countries has a population of about 67 million residents.

A small study of chloroquine, which is closely related to the hydroxychloroquine drug President Trump has enthusiastically promoted, was halted in Brazil after coronavirus patients taking a higher dose developed irregular heart rates that increased their risk of a potentially fatal arrhythmia.

The study involved 81 hospitalized patients in the city of Manaus and was sponsored by the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Roughly half the study participants were given a dose of 450 milligrams of chloroquine twice daily for five days, while the rest were prescribed a higher dose of 600 milligrams for 10 days. Within three days, researchers started noticing heart arrhythmias in patients taking the higher dose. By the sixth day of treatment, 11 patients had died, leading to an immediate end to the high-dose segment of the trial.

Hopefully most Americans can figure that out for themselves. The ones that can't are low information on a lot of levels.

China on Monday reported its highest number of new coronavirus cases since early March, most of them involving people returning from other countries. The uptick heightened fears of a second wave and led to new constraints on travel.
