"Suit up!" radio host Janet Parshall told attendees at the National Religious Broadcasters convention. "It's war!"
This notion of US politics as a righteous religious "war" has a long and ugly history. This war is understood as an over-arching battle between the forces of good and evil, that is, between God and Satan. And it isn't a figurative battle but literal one. The influence of this conception has ebbed and waned but it made a resurgence during the Goldwater period (Goldwater later distanced himself from these people) and then went into overdrive during the Reagan period. It is a fundamental leg in the conservative movement's conceptions and level of political activism. It is highly evident in the right wing evangelical community and less evident but equally influential in right wing US catholicism. It was a conception that Antonin Scalia held to be true and you can see it quite transparently in William Barr's comments and speeches today.
An important part of this is that because it is believed literally and because the outcomes of the "war" are believed to be so grave and absolute, these folks are very serious and committed to crushing the secular enemy (who represent Satan in this worldview). If you wonder why these people keep coming regardless of science or reasoning or new knowledge of any sort that might be relevant, that's why.
