Leftists are highly bigoted towards the south and southerners.

And there isn't a leftist alive who doesn't wish that they had been able to spit on soldiers returning from Vietnam. They just hate American soldiers in general.

The idea of attacking southern war veterans is an intoxicating double-whammy for leftists. Look at the way they go after monuments to the South's war dead.
