Most Americans think Trump is failing the middle class

By Jane [email protected] Aug 14, 2018, 4:10pm EDT

Most Americans, including many white voters without college degrees, think the Trump administration isn’t doing enough to help the middle class — a worrying finding for the GOP ahead of November’s midterms.

The new poll released Tuesday by Quinnipiac University found that a majority of Americans dislike Trump’s policies and disapprove of how he’s performing as president. And 48 percent of those polled strongly disapproved of Trump’s efforts so far.

A majority of those polled — 58 percent — believe that the Trump administration isn’t doing enough to help middle-class Americans. That includes women and nonwhite voters — 87 percent of black voters polled think that the administration isn’t helping middle-class Americans.

That’s true even of white voters without college degrees, a group that overwhelmingly supported Trump in 2016. Those voters were closely split on whether Trump is doing enough for the middle class: 49 percent say he is not, while 46 percent say he is. (The remaining 5 percent said they didn’t know.) The poll has a margin of error of 3.4 percentage points.

The only two groups who think Trump is doing enough for the middle class are Republicans and white men, according to the poll.

One key to understanding Democratic opportunities in November: while a striking 49% of US said in a recent @QuinnipiacPoll that Trump is racist, the share in the new poll that say he's not doing enough to help middle-class is even higher: 58%. That includes 49% of non-col whites

The polling on views of Trump and the Trump administration follows a survey performed in July that showed 54 percent of voters across 48 GOP-controlled congressional districts said Republicans are “more corrupt” than Democrats — a message the Democratic National Committee is taking into the midterms, as I wrote in July:

Democrats are making anti-corruption part of their midterm messaging, adding an anti-corruption plank to the party’s “A Better Deal” proposal announced in February and arguing for improved ethics legislation on the basis of continued corrupt behavior in government ... As Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in May during a press briefing to announce the anti-corruption push, “Instead of delivering on his promise to drain the swamp, President Trump has become the swamp. Republicans, the White House, and the Congress are cravenly beholden to big money interests, and the American people are paying the price.”

It is a little too late for that. With Obama's weaponized mafia we saw more corruption than ever and it is still being uncovered by their own investigations. Stuck on stupid and out of touch.

@coldjoint,
No worries, once Mueller's investigation is complete, that will be fixed.

You mean destroy the country. That would amount to the same thing. Thanks for nothing.

He is not trying to reverse the results of an election. The mess belongs to you.

@coldjoint,
No one is trying to reverse an election. We just acknowledge it was a wrong decision and are going to fix it.

You are saying the American people made the wrong decision and you have the right to change it? They make those decisions because they are the boss. That is un-American, and it shows.

I have every right to change history by voting. It IS the American way. Too bad you don't believe in it.

@jcboy,
I saw a summary of Trumps tweets where he has called people “dogs” before. He’s done that about A LOT and I think he’s covered the racial and gender gamet for that particular insult. I don’t think it’s based on her race or gender.

@maporsche,
Maybe not race or gender, however it’s just a new low, it’s a breathtakingly low for the tone of ‘leadership’ in this country. We now have the Queens, New York version of the Beverly Hillbillies in the White House.....however in that TV series, the hillbillies might have been clueless but they were not dirtbags.

Trump is the nightmare brother-in-law/Uncle/ favorite Aunts’ vulgar son you pray won’t show up at your party, or the wedding of your daughter or a funeral....Trump is a dirtbag and maybe not clueless......deliberately offensive and rude and crude in an effort to make it all about him.....because that’s the only thing that matters to himself...

Illinois' attorney general is suing Chicago's Trump International Hotel & Tower for allegedly breaking environmental laws.

Lisa Madigan's suit claims the property draws and releases millions of gallons of water from the Chicago River without necessary permits.

Moreover, the property has not studied the effects of this on the river's fish population as required by law, it says.

A Trump Organisation spokesperson said the suit was political.

In an email reported by Reuters news agency, spokesperson Janet Isabelli said the organisation was "disappointed" Ms Madison filed the suit, "considering such items are generally handled at the administrative level".

"One can only conclude that this decision was motivated by politics."

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court on Tuesday.

She is a member of the Democratic Party and has been the state's attorney general since 2003.

Her suit alleges the hotel draws in nearly 20 million gallons (75m litres) of water a day for its air conditioning and ventilation system.

Such systems can trap animals when pulling in the water, the suit says, and federal law requires impact studies on the Chicago River's fish populations.

Allegedly Trump Tower did not submit results of a study to the authorities as required in 2013.

Moreover, the property's required licence to release heated water back into the river allegedly expired in August 2017.

"Trump Tower continues to take millions of gallons of water from the Chicago River every day without a permit and without any regard to how it may be impacting the river's ecosystem," Ms Madigan said in a statement.

"I filed my lawsuit to make sure Trump Tower cannot continue violating the law."

While Mr Trump's two sons have been running his businesses since he was elected to office, the president still retains all his shares in the Trump Organization.

He is currently embroiled in a lawsuit about his businesses, including the Trump International Hotel, which alleges ownership of the Trump business empire while president is a violation of the US constitution.

In June, a group of religious leaders and judges in Washington DC filed a complaint to the city's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board saying it should lose its liquor licence due to Mr Trump's "egregious conduct".

Local laws in the US capital say only people "of good character" can hold a liquor licence.

Twitter is blocking the right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones from posting to its platform for a week.

The InfoWars broadcaster's past tweets will, however, remain viewable to others while his account is locked in a "read-only" mode.

The social network has not confirmed what prompted the action.

But the New York Times reported Mr Jones had tweeted a link to a video in which he called on his followers to ready their "battle rifles".

The BBC understands that Twitter judged this to be a violation of its rules against abusive behaviour.

The restriction appears to only be effective against the @RealAlexJones account, which has 890,000 followers.

Mr Jones has since posted a video in which he discusses the move to a separate @Infowars feed - with about 431,000 followers - which he described as being a "sub-account".
