If you want to lose weight you have to cut out sugar and flour, especially wheat flour, anything made with wheat flour, white or whole-wheat, it doesn't matter. Pastries, bread, pasta, etc., all have to go. A lot of people think that whole wheat bread is okay, but whole wheat flour has an even slightly higher glycemic value than white flour.
Now, if you want to lose a lot of weight you probably should eliminate all those foods until you get your weight down to where you want it. If you just want to lose a little weight cut down on the flour.
Now , I started making whole wheat tortillas for the fiber using 1 1/3 cups of whole wheat flour per day. After a month or so I gained weight around the waist even though I walk 2 miles a day. I was having a hard time getting enough fiber even though I eat tons of vegetables, except for beans, which I have a hard time dealing with. I just couldn't get enough fiber, so that's when I started making whole wheat tortillas.
A book I recommend for overweight people, especially for people with prediabetes or diabetes is "Wheat Belly" by Dr. William Davis.
