I swear, internet message boards make normally decent people look socially retarded on a daily basis. I know, as I'm sure I've been guilty of it myself.
Well said ! One who goes out of his/her way to express "contempt" for the "person" of another poster here -- someone we know ONLY by what is written here -- is confusing this dialogue with real life.
We all annoy each other from time to time, but the fact that we keep coming back indicates that we, each in his own way, find something agreeable or beneficial about the experience here. It is irrational to become really angry at some poster, and then to engage him/her again and again.
There is an old riff about the academic world --- QUESTION Why are academic rivalries pursued so tenaciously and with such bitterness ?
ANSWER - "Because the stakes are so low."
I believe that applies here. We merely exchange words and ideas on a web page - there are no consequences, and no one keeps score. Why get angry????
