Because Trump has proven that the US presidency just needs money, the awareness of this could provoke extreme reaction: why should the presidency be endowed with such respect, when it can just be bought?

Well whether it's John Kennedy's father buying votes or candidates having to pay the media to advertise the presidency has always been but so your statement is kind of naïve don't you think?

Actually I am pretty sure Trump spent less than most presidencies have in the last couple of elections. At least from what I remember of past news articles about his spending.
