3 Newspapers Report Letters with Suspicious Powder

Published: October 04, 2004

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Another newspaper has received a letter containing a suspicious powder.

This time, it's the Charlotte Observer in Charlotte, North Carolina. Today, the newspaper received a letter containing a grainy substance much like that found in packages opened at two other U.S. newspapers since Friday.

Fire officials quickly determined the substance was not a biohazard and posed no immediate threat to employees. They could not immediately tell what it was.

A newspaper security official says the letter included a typed note with comments critical of the Iraq war and of President Bush. The first line of the letter said the substance was snail bait.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland received a similar letter on Saturday. On Friday, it was The Des Moines Register.
