If you missed your morning coffee and now you have a headache and difficulty concentrating, you might be able to blame it on caffeine withdrawal. In general, the more caffeine consumed, the more severe withdrawal symptoms are likely to be, but as little as one standard cup of coffee a day can produce caffeine addiction, according to a Johns Hopkins study that reviewed over 170 years of caffeine withdrawal research.

Like duh!! I coulda told them that after 170 minutes of research!

Quote:
"Despite more than a century and a half of investigation into caffeine withdrawal, doctors and other health professionals have had no scientifically based framework for diagnosing the syndrome," says Griffiths. "Our goal was to critically review the literature regarding caffeine withdrawal to validate the symptoms and signs of illness associated with it, and to determine how often withdrawal produced clinically significant distress."

Realspeak: no coffe, no workee.

I have been hooked on coffee from the age of twelve. I quit tobacco and drink years ago, but never coffee. However, the older I get the less my system tolerates it. I've had to cut down by over half the past two years.

I like my coffee, only one cup a day for me…I also had to cut down because my system doesn't seem to tolerate it as well as it used to. I found that strong tea can give you a caffeine buzz without the side effects that coffee sometimes generates.

Caffeine is the petrol that runs my engine. Coffee in the morning (so strong it makes your teeth squeak) and tea all afternoon and all evening. About 6 coffees and 6-8 teas a day, on average. Weekends, however, I drink alcohol!

I don't handle caffeine very well. Especially not on an empty stomach. Makes me feel like I'm getting ready to speak to 5,000 people. I can't handle it in medications, either. A tall glass of iced tea doesn't bother me, but the coffee has to wait until after a big dinner.

Ever since I had my first Cuban 15 years ago I make one every morning with my espresso machine. I heat a cup of milk and a tsp of sugar and add a doppio espresso. That's all the coffee I need for the day.

I'd been drinking coffee since the 3rd grade (6 cups a day) until I realized that it was linked to my EXTREME stomach discomfort. Now caffeine is completely out of the picture, although there is enough caffeine in green tea, decalf coffee, and chocolate to give me a little buzz.

I also had been smoking for a long time, and stopped that. Apparently it's bad for you.

Getting up at 7 in the morning with no stimulants can be quite a task.

P.S. I've heard very good things about Jamaican blue.

Jamaican Blue Mountain is the finest coffee I've ever tried. It must be about $60.00 a pound now.

We were in Jamaica a coupla years ago, and it was expensive even there. But worth it. It was delicious.

Portal Star, for a lot of people it's the hot beverage that wakes them up more than the caffeine. My husband has a coupla cups of decaffeinated tea every morning and says it works just as well as coffee. He keeps a drawer full of different flavors.

Got a bag of fresh-roasted Kenya AA the other day (A & E Roastery). Ground some up and made a cup of crema with my espresso machine.

BOO-YAH!!!

In days of old, I used to study with a bowl of mixed instant coffee granules and sugar. Ate it by the spoonful.

It was funny, the first morning of our honeymoon in Jamaica we were served Blue Mountain on our balcony...my wife took two sips and went running for the bathroom.

A friend brewed us some Blue Mountain one morning. It was good. It was good coffee, it was not particularly special. (Don't tell. We cooed and said "Ooo".)

Mobil gas stations were selling Blue mountain. Apparently if you don't add Jamaican it can be anything

JAY-ZUS, MARE-E'N'JO-SEP!!!

Is there NO shame in this world!!! Decaffinated tea! Then he's off to the excitement-packed career of the quantity surveyor? Or actuarial work if quantity surveying isn't 'extreme' enough?

If I started drinking anything decaffeinated, I think my heart would stop. I drink coffee all day, from the moment I get up. Well, not the exact moment, of course. One has to brew it first. I consume about a liter a day, including fairly late at night. I'm sitting right now, typing, with a tepid cup of black, lightly sweetened, coffee to hand. It's 10 p.m. Won't keep me from sleeping when I'm ready. It's the fuel that keeps my engine running. A large thermos goes to work with me every morning. Black, about one tsp of sugar per cup.

I prefer Hawaiian Kona myself but will settle for any decent full-bodied variety.

Funny, Mr. Stillwater! Actually, he's in technical sales...industrial automation. So he meets with clients and their engineers and prepares multi-million dollar bids. And troubleshoots. He has to be sharp from 7:45 a.m. on. He loves good coffee, but gave up caffeine several years ago at the doctors' insistence. It was rough at first, he says.

'Rough' - that word is not able to convey the full range of human experience without coffee. The only word after 'macchiato' that springs to my mind is 'postal'. My commiserations to the fellow, he must be a hollow, shambling shadow of his former self.............
