We've been friends for years. I was thinking to myself today that I have turned out to be a shitty person. When I asked him why he had stayed by me all these years and remained my friend he said I would have to look to myself to find the answer. Did he just tell me he loves me? I have told him I love him before. I just never showed it with my actions. I regret it now. I've just always been with some other guy and now we're roommates. I don't know what to do or say now.

There's no reason whatsoever why it has to be one or the other.
But I caution you that one on one platonic roommates really shouldn't date. If you break up, somebody ends up having to move.

It's more of friends with benefits than platonic. We've had sex on occasion over the past 3 years.
