Afghanistan? Weaponry? Coins from Afghanistan and vicinity?

Hi. I'm looking for good links to the history of Afghanistan, especially if the links include pictures of artifacts. My son is over there and collecting items for sale in the bazaars, curious about their origins, how authentic the stories the merchants are telling about their wares. I don't even know where to begin to look for such information. Every search attempt has landed me at some coin site w/silver jewelry and few facts. Like, ds has bought some coins w/Alexander the Great's picture on them. Was he there? (I thought not...) Sorry I am so ignorant...

Well, I wont discuss, what perhaps could be called the "morality" of doing such, what you son does.

Neither the legal aspects.

Those are great links, Walter! Mahalo, or Danke! Very Happy

The morality of plundering is sticky. On one hand, it's going on with or without my ds' perusing bazaar selections, and his purchases are only small potatoes. And tied in with that is the scavenging of flotsom and jetsom from the beaches: hawaiians and island people in general are more likely to pick something up which appears to be cast off or down and keep it with the attitude "finders keepers." On the other hand, but buying in to it, it perpetuates the looting of historical sites...

I'm still wondering if the coins and stuff he's buying are genuine artifacts or copies, but he's enjoying the stories spun by the merchants almost as much as owning the objects, I think, so it really doesn't matter... But it's got me wondering if there might not be a book on the subject out there which would be a good Christmas present for my little soldier-child to sharpen his knowledge of identifying fakes...

If you happen to know of a book in english... Embarrassed

"From Alexander to Cleopatra" by Dr. Michael Grant might be worth reading. He covers the history of the various Greek kingdoms left behind in the wake of Alexander III (The Great). Present day Afghanistan was the Kingdom of Bactria for around 300 years. Greek coins from that era are not uncommon. One coin dealer who handles a wide variety of ancient coinage has a website at www.elsen.be. A visit might give you some idea of what is available.
