WASHINGTON -- The nation's unemployment rate moved higher as U.S. employers cut jobs for a third consecutive month, suggesting the overall economy continues to struggle.
Nonfarm business payrolls declined by 48,000 in April after a revised drop of 124,000 in March, the Labor Department (news - web sites) said Friday. The unemployment rate rose to 6% from 5.8% in March.
The increase in the employment rate was larger than expected, while the payroll decline in April was less than economists had projected after two months of steep payroll cuts. A consensus forecast of economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires and CNBC had called for a payroll drop of 68,000 and a 5.9% unemployment rate. In February, U.S. employers slashed 353,000 jobs, the largest amount since the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

True how true but in spite of that American public opinion supports him, and his chances for reelection grow stronger by the day. How do you reconcile that?

Tom DeLay has pressured his party in the Texas legislature to push through a quick and dirty new (we just had another one)redistricting plan to ensure Republican dominance forever.... The legislative Speaker has scheduled it for a vote tomorrow, Saturday, when virtually no one will be there -- they are committed to other legislative duties. Any Texan reading this and wanting more info can go to MoveOn.org and/or contact your legislator today to try to stop this.

Redistricting goes on forever and is perpetuated by both parties.

GA recently underwent a redistricting by Dems to cut my area out of a GOP seat, they had hoped. We voted out the Dem, instead.

Here is a non-partisan link, appopriate because it is a bi-partisan practice.

But in Texas, there has already been a Bush redistricting -- two, three years ago. Their aim this time is to get rid of one Dem congressman -- an excellent guy by the way, admired on both sides -- because he allegedly doesn't pay attention to minorities. However, the minorities in his district are fighting hard to keep him. Go figure.

No am not buying! What he has done IMO is capture the American public with his war on terrorism, Afghanistan and Iraq. I don't know how exactly to express this but everyone loves a winner and that is how he is being perceived. He is also perceived as someone who not only threatens but takes action. Americans love that.
It must come from all that TV we watch.

I'm not sure all that many people see him as a winner. Here I am in Texas, just listening to the conversations around me, and everyone talks about (say) the aircraft carrier landing as manipulative stuff. Whether that translates into a vote against him, I don't know. But I'm interested that people on the one hand stay glued to the screen and on the other remark on how manipulative the media and the White House handlers are.

You may be talking to people with a like mind as yourself. The polls do not bear you out. Consider for an instant what the results of an election would be if only people on the a2k voted. Bush would lose by a landslide. Why? Because about 90% are liberals.
That my friend does not mirror the general publics beliefs and politics.

I no longer believe the polls. If the Supreme Court can select the president, those damn polls can be manipulated.

But support you're right, Au, and most people really do support Bush? Is that any reason to be patriotic? Or would one ask in that case (I would), Who can respect Americans now? Who can respect any but those marchers you were so scathing about?

To argue what is patriotic and what is not would not be fruitful. I will say however, your definition and mine are worlds apart. I may dislike Bush and his administration and say so. But I would never denigrate and vilify the US as a nation as so many on the a2k have done. The US with all it's warts is still head and shoulders above any nation on earth.

And you think that's good. Now you can all agree with each other and pat each other on the ------ with impunity while preaching to the choir.

That's better than you playing the un-American committee. If you have a problem with someone's politics, address the issue. The incessant whining by the political minority here only does them a disservice.
