Italgato - what a brilliant insight! Elaine Chao! How could I not have thought she was so terribly accomplished and knowledgeable? The proof of her skills and abilities is out there for all to see. Of course, most people have no idea who she is, or what she does, or what she's supposed to do.

I suspect the reason you haven't met many brilliant women is because it doesn't seem a republican policy to have women anywhere. I admire Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson - but how many more are there? The republicans seem to prefer the Stepford Wives.

And interesting about Peace and Prosperity - a venerable slogan, used by early German settlers in the US, and in the Napoleonic wars. In our present day, however, the peace part seems precarious, and the prosperity - well, the jobless situation would need a very quick, very big fix. But then we had Peace and Prosperity under the last administration, and the republicans were very dissatisfied with that. So they fixed it.

The democrats have had there share of stepford clones too.. remember Tipper? One of my favourite TV moments: Blackie Lawless answering questions from the Tipster during her PMRC crusade. Very Happy
Quote:
A big girl with the kind of sorority girl attitude that would stop a pig in traffic, Tipper is mostly remembered for championing record censorship in 1985 as part of the Parents' Music Resource Center (PMRC). Ultimately, the PMRC was successful in forcing the record industry into placing consumer labels on music with violent or explicit lyrics. Parents across American can feel safe knowing their kids won't be exposed to anything jarring or repulsive thanks to the PMRC "CENSORED" label.

Thankfully, our Mrs. Gore can take a joke as well as any ex-cheerleader with big hair and the kind of breasts that could nurse a snake at the bottom of a volcano. Whether it's playing drums for Dweezil Zappa's latest album or inline skating with her kids, Tipper's the kind of gal you'd pick first for your softball team.

A rewind of the movie taken from a Google link.
***************************************
"As this is the 70s, don't expect a happy ending and you won't get one. There's a theory that I read somewhere, that when societies are going through relatively calm and prosperous times, then the popular culture output allows itself to become reflective, questioning its own sense of complacency, explaining perhaps the rash of "unhappy ending" movies in the 70s. However, when societies grow dark with recession and war, our desire for escapist happy-ending increases and this is reflected by Hollywood et al. The Stepford Wives could only have been made in the 70s - an 80s or 90s version would have had everyone tightly wrapped up by Sigourney Weaver at the end, and the film would have lost its power to scare, or to remain in your head long after the final credits have rolled."

This explains everything. Scary isn't it?

I think feeling special allegiance to women politicians because one's a women is as dangerous as feeling special allegiance to men because one's a man. The fact that men do this (vide W) only shows they are narrow-minded. Let's not become like them, fellow-wimmins!

I agree, Tart. There are male and female politicians I like and dislike - because of who they are and what they do and don't do.

I had a specific female republican in mind. A lady from my state, a repub House rep. Won all her elections. She held office for repeated terms, was a careful and thoughtful rep, enjoyed great respect, and I voted for her every time. Then came the change in administration, and the reorganization of the House. This rep was senior, and up for a particular chair. But, her fellow repub reps gave it to a more junior man - and the message was quite clear. She chose not to run next time. Came the primary, and she did not back the man the repub party put up. That's when they realized this woman had earned a following, who left when she did. This is one story. But when I look at the faces in the republican side of the House, they do not represent the country. As I recall, when Elaine Chao was named (shortly after to fade into oblivion), there was great fuss made of her being a woman and Chinese. To show diversity, I guess. Now, do you know who the other Asian in the cabinet is? Most people don't.

Light wizard. Foot in mouth disease - leading to mad cows running in the road, to be harassed by SUVs?

mamaj, The only reason I know is because it's Norm Mineta from San Jose, California. He's respected by everybody in our area, no matter what party affiliation, because he has devoted his public life for everybody, and not for any particular party. When I was a registered repub many years ago, and he was a congressman, he invited me to have lunch with him at the congressional dining room at the national capital when my sister, niece and I visited Washington DC, just because I asked his local office for passes to the DC museums, FBI offices, Kennedy Center, and other attractions in DC. I've been told by many who have met him, that he has always been hospitable to those that visit him in Washington. I feel he is one of the best public servants in Washington today and yesterday.

hobitbob, re:Tipper on the record labeling fiasco - at the time I was very hesitant to back Al because of Tippers moves - and therefore got behind Dukakis . However, I now have 3 children ages 12, 15 and 18 and find that since I do not listen to their music, the labeling helps me parent. There was in effect no censorship (as was being parroted at the time by pundits and opponents). It is a useful tool that helps me tremendously.

May I remind also that the lyrics of 1985 were not nearly as intolerable as the lyrics that would arise in the 90's and still going strong today. Because of this realization today, I acquired mucho respect for Tipper - though Stepford wife is still not an exaggeration. She had her spotlight, did what was needed and then returned to a step back and to the left of Al - like all good politician wives should be. Where did this monster Hillary come from Shocked  Laughing

Does anyone think that the labeling has allowed "artists" to put more filth in their recordings? It almost seems like a license to ill....

please explain -

As to your whole concept - no, I see no cause and effect - commercialism, and the never ending trend to go one step further (evolution) - now, there I see an orientation. Blame it all on William Blake, Edgar Allen Poe, Lewis Carroll and H. G. Wells.

Heck, the real culprit is Eve, cause if she didn't bite into the apple we won't have any ability to have guilt and remorse!

Oh, wait...nothing to worry about. The best minds in America are supporting Bush, how can we insignificant mortals complain?
Cuz, like, He's the president, and stuf...y'know...umm...

Britney wrote:
Spears avoided the political pot hole that other entertainers have fallen into when she was asked about whether she supported the war in Iraq.

"Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that," she said

Hmm, all this from a woman whose parents were too dumb to spell "Brittany"! Rolling Eyes

My point is that since the labeling came into effect the content seems to have gotten exponentially worse. Much of it is purely for shock value. Take for instance Sum 41's "A.N.I.C.":

You look like ass
You smell like ****
So why are you such a dick
You walk around like your the tits
You always make me sick

Bound for agony
Your life's catastrophe

So, let me get this straight, the Republican have Britney and Ozzie on their side - way to go!!!!!!!

Quote:
Tucker Carlson had a hard-hitting interview with Britney Spears which was played on Crossfire today:

CARLSON: A lot of entertainers have come out against the war in Iraq. Have you?
SPEARS: Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens.
CARLSON: Do you trust this president?
SPEARS: Yes, I do.
CARLSON: Excellent. Do you think he's going to win again?
SPEARS: I don't know. I don't know that.
Wait a minute. Let me reread that. Hmm. Mmm-hmmm. Nope. I don't see it. Nowhere to be found.

You know - the question the wingnut pundits always ask Janeane Garofalo, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Rob Reiner, Martin Sheen, Mike Farrell and thousands of others:

"WHY SHOULD WE CARE WHAT YOU THINK?"

Oops. Almost forgot the footnote.

However, the singer would love to move to another country. She may follow Madonna's lead and take up residence in London.

"It's the one place that I feel completely anonymous. And I just like the way they treasure everything. Everything is very simply done," she explained. "The milkman still comes to the door. And I like the simplicity of that."

Yay America. The pride is showing.

I am very much afraid that Mamajuana knows nothing about Elaine Chao.

I hope I can help Mamajuana with the following information:

What are Elaine Chao's qualifications?

She is the Secretary of Labor

She was Director of the Peace Corps

She was the President and chief executive officer of the United Way

She was Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Transportation

She was Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission

She was the Vice President of syndication for Bank America

She graduated with an MBA from HARVARD.

Perhaps, Mamajuana does not feel that these qualifications are enough.

Perhaps Mamajuana would like to post the qualifications of a Democratic female office holder.

I note that the most famous of the Democratic Women - Hillary Rodham Clinton has the following qualifications.

l. Senator from New York

2. Married to and by the President of the United States- Blll Clinton-

3. Partner in the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock Arkansas

4. Graduate from Yale Law School.

IT WOULD APPEAR TO ANY UNBIASED OBSERVER THAT ELAINE CHAO'S QUALIFICATIONS EASILY TRUMP THOSE OF HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON-

But then, perhaps, Mamajuana is ignorant of Elaine Chao's background.

I am very much afraid that you, massagattos, are injecting too much personal invective in your posts.

We don't really go for that sort of thing over here.

Your point could have been made without ever mentioning another poster by name.

While scanning the news today, I looked for Molly Ivin's latest columns in the DFW Star-Telegram. She wrote a humdinger about the administrations's labor policy and Elaine Chao. It seems she has done something to unite labor...against the administration! There are a few choice comments about Eugene Scalia of K Street fame also. Yeah, the son of Anthony...you know THAT guy. Better read it now, as it was put in on the 31st and will disappear soon. Ciao.
