The kid must most likely be a savant (another word for an expert) at what he does, in which case he must have studied really hard to be intelligent.
Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates, Sir Isaac Newton and even the Japanese guy who invented Pokemon have been reported to have Aspergers, but it's never been proved. As far as being socially awkward goes, one can have a great deal of trouble interacting with your peers.
Here's how I see it: when you have Aspergers or any form of high-functioning autism, one half of your brain enables you to project things, keep them in memory, and recite them out in absolute precise detail (for example, one autistic guy was taken on a flight over Rome in Italy and drew the landscape as it stood all from memory!). The other half prevents you from developing social bondages with many people, because that part of the brain has certain 'missing gaps' which cause the entire thing to be incomplete. It's like a social barrier preventing you from making ANY kind of communication unless you have some sort of special clearance.
