Occam and Osso are right re the red flags. I think this guy is looking for sympathy. And, even if he isn't, he's looking to monopolize you. Those sorts of things always make me nervous - no relationship should be 100% only between 2 people. People have got to have outside friends and interests. It can't just be "you and me against the world"; that shuts out way too many potential friends. So I'd advise caution.
PS There's plenty of reason to lie about being "damaged" when it's a play for sympathy.
